Welcome to the year of the Yin/Metal/Ox. How is the name of the year determined and where are we in the course of this ongoing lunar calendar system? Here is a ...quick look. The Chinese calendar was developed by combining the 10 Heavenly Stems with the twelve Earthly Branches. Mathematically this makes 60 possible combinations. Each of the Earthly Branches was assigned an animal of the Chinese zodiac and the 10 Heavenly Stems were paired with one of the five elements and either a yang or yin aspect. Therefore, in a 10 year period of time, we have a yang metal followed by a yin metal then yang water and yin water and so on through the rest of the five elements. A year ending in the number 1, such as this year 2021, will always be Yin Metal. This system was devised by Huang Di in the year 2697 BC. We are currently in the 79th cycle of the 60 year blocks and it is the 37 year (xin1 chou3) of that cycle. That makes this year the 4717th year of the Huang Di’s calendar. You will do well in an Ox year if you focus on hard work, remain positive, and embrace honesty.
