Our work is integral to the vitality of the city. We have continued to serve our community and visitors as the COVID-19 crisis has evolved. While we have followed CDC guidelines and implemented measures to promote health and safety, there is no way to fully mitigate the risks while still endeavoring to serve our community. We kept our doors open because our teams deserve the opportunity to earn a living, because we believe in the power of good food and good company in difficult times, and because our supply chain reaches across the local and state economy. In Savannah and across the state, service industry workers are some of the most vulnerable. And few businesses are more vulnerable than ours. Many of our workers rely on tips and none of us have the option to work from home. Savannah is home to many acclaimed bars and restaurants which are crucial to the ongoing success of the city. Within days, we may all be required to close. We will not survive without decisive action from your administration. Therefore, we have come together to call on you to announce immediate plans to safeguard the livelihood of small businesses and their employees. We ask that you: * Support immediate unemployment benefits for all hourly and salaried workers furloughed during this crisis via state-issued guidance. * Eliminate state payroll tax for the period of impact. * Suspend sales tax payments for bars and restaurants until this crisis has passed. * Work with insurance providers to help to fund business interruption insurance for the period of impact. * Call for rent and loan abatement for workers impacted by restaurant and bar closures. * Declare an economic injury loan disaster so restaurateurs can apply for U.S. Small Business Association disaster loan assistance. * Create a state income tax credit for employers who continue to pay their employees during closure or limited service due to the pandemic. * Allow restaurants with alcohol licenses to deliver alcohol so that we have the opportunity to earn revenue to keep our teams paid. Governor Kemp, we need your help. Our workers deserve the chance to support their families through this crisis. We elected you. We are counting on you to help the restaurant workers of Savannah and across the state.
