The National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for Mariners and People of the Sea will be celebrated May 22. The day is observed in conjunction with National Maritime Day in the United States of America, which has been celebrated since 1933 to honor those who serve as merchant mariners and to recognize the benefits of the maritime industry.

Saint Rita of Cascia showed an interest in religious life as a young woman, but was betrothed instead, at the wish of her parents. Rita bore her husband twin sons, but he was a violent and cruel man. Even though her husband was not the man of her dreams, Rita tried to be a good wife, a loving mother, and receive the Sacraments as often as she could. After almost 20 years of marriage, Rita's husband was stabbed to death by an enemy. Not long after her husband's murder, Rita's ...sons passed away as well. Alone, she filled her days with good works, prayers, penances, and fasting. She joined a convent of Augustinian nuns and was an example of obedience and charity. Rita was extremely devoted to the Passion of Christ. One day she prayed, "Please let me suffer like you, Divine Savior." Immediately after her prayer, one of the thorns from the crucifix she was praying in front of punctured her forehead. Her forehead displayed a deep wound which did not heal and caused her pain and suffering for the rest of her life. Saint Rita of Cascia is the patroness of impossible causes, victims of spousal abuse, and widows. Reflect: Despite the difficulties and violent hardships of her life, Saint Rita was a devoted wife and mother. She loved all those in her life and, above all, loved God. She saw her suffering as an opportunity to more wholly understand, love, and be united with God. Think of the suffering in your own life. Imagine that, through it, you are experiencing the suffering of Christ. Imagine that he is suffering with you now. Know that he loves you deeply. Source: St. Mary's Press

Tuesday of the Thirtieth Week in Ordinary Time - Morning Mass
Saint Alphonsus Rodriguez was born in Segovia, Spain. He was the son of a wool merchant who died when Alphonsus was young, leaving the business to him. He married and had three children. Not long after, he found himself a widower with only one surviving child. On the death of his third child, his thoughts turned to religious life. After some setbacks, he joined the Society of Jesus on January 31, 1571, at the age of 40. After six months, he was sent to the college in Majorca,... where he was assigned the humble position of a porter. He exercised a wonderful influence on the sanctification of the members of the household, as well as many people who came to the porter's house for advice and guidance. One of the notable Jesuits that Alphonsus influenced was Saint Peter Claver, who lived for some time at Majorca. Saint Alphonsus died on October 31, 1617, and was canonized in 1888 Reflection: Great good can come from tragedy, even when a situation seems hopeless. Saint Alphonsus Rodriguez lost many important people in his life whom he loved very much, but ended up touching the lives and hearts of many when he joined the Society of Jesus. If you have experienced a tragedy in your life, ask God for help in dealing with any feelings of hurt, grief, or anger that you have. Read more at http://ow.ly/nh3n50zXXDI
