The 420 Tiny Home Our tiny home is complete! I’ve mentioned before about my obsession with small living and cramming space and function together, but this was a... challenge to say the least. When I bought my house a couple years ago, there was a shed in the backyard that was built better than the actual house. It was an empty 260 sq ft building with some electrical, no plumbing, no sheet rock, a thick foundation, a divider wall, and lots of bugs. I despise yard work, so I didn’t need a place to store a lawn mower. So Emma and I came up with an idea to convert it into a pool house/mother-in-law suite/fully functioning apartment. The words fully functioning is what made this project so difficult. How do you squeeze a washer and dryer, shower, bathroom sink, kitchen sink, dishwasher, oven, fridge, dining room, living room, and bedroom into 260 sq ft?? It’s impossible, right? Nope! Just look at the pictures dum dum. Jk, luv u. Emma and I gutted the building, designed the layout, and put our contractors Kenny and Kevin to work. Some of our favorite features include the custom-made platform bed with handrail, step ladder, outlets next to the mattress, clothes drawers built into the platform, and open storage located behind the drawers and under the mattress (not shown). The custom entertainment cabinet under the TV was a last minute but fave addition to hide all of the internet and power cables. We designed the outside of the building to be completely closed off from our backyard, but accessible from the side of our house. Emma and I have a way of getting into the tiny home front yard, but it’s locked from their side. Totally separate living in our own backyard. A few hurdles, like, 10 foot hurdles wrapped in barb wire: 1. an 8-gallon water heater is not enough for one person. So we ditched it and upgraded to like a 50-gallon. 2. My electrician stole $2,500 from me. Gave me the run around for buying and installing a mini split. Haven’t heard from him since. 3. Flooding in the bathroom. It rained a lot recently. So much so that the groundwater came up through the bottom of the toilet. Better than coming from inside the toilet I guess. I cannot say enough good things about Kenny Earl! This man puts up with a lot of my crap. Most times I set him on a task, and halfway through completion I send him a redesign, and most times he says, If that’s what you want, we can make it happen. Sometimes he’ll challenge me on my wacky idea, but it’s rare or it’s something that I don’t know what I’m talking about. And Tony is an amazing painter and friend, even though his jokes are bad and he hangs out with Tyrus. What do you think? Would you do something like this in your backyard?

It has taken almost two years, but Emma and I have a fully finished living space. It is our favorite space in the house so far. On to the next room!
