Even children without speech delays benefit from strong phonological awareness skills before formal reading instruction. Several phonological awareness skills have been linked to success in learning to read and spelling. Some examples of Phonological Awareness skills include: Rhyming- what rhymes with cat? Do cake and bake rhyme?... Segmenting words- How many syllables in dinosaur? Di-no-saur Let’s clap it together. Identify words with the same beginning sound- Do take and time start with the same sound? What else starts with the same sound as take? Identify words with the same final sound-Do tag and big end with the same final sound? What else ends with the same sound as tag? Phonological Awareness skills are easy for parents, teachers and therapists to work on. I played rhyming and listening games with my own children in the car or while shopping. As a speech-language pathologist, I have practiced syllables while hopping down the hall, facilitated a center in a Pre-K class and led phonological awareness large group lessons.
