Eating peanuts may be a simple way to increase longevity, even for high risk populations. A new study of over 200,000 people shows that peanut-eaters decreased total deaths by 21% and reduced cardiovascular deaths by 38%. The study was released this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association Internal Medicine (JAMA Internal Medicine) and was conducted at Vanderbilt University and the Shanghai Cancer Institute.
MAJOR FINDINGS ON PEANUT ALLERGY - For years, parents were told that the best way to prevent kids from becoming allergic to peanuts was to withhold peanuts from their children's diet. That advice couldn't have been more wrong, a new study shows. For the first time, researchers have shown that children who are regularly fed small amounts of peanuts from their infancy are actually less likely than others to develop peanut allergies.... Babies regularly given peanuts for at least four years cut their risk of peanut allergy by an average of 81%, compared to children who avoided peanuts, according to a study published today in The New England Journal of Medicine. Authors note that this regimen should only be attempted under a doctor's supervision, because allergic reactions to peanuts can be life-threatening. The results are "without precedent," said Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, which helped fund the study of 640 children. "The results have the potential to transform how we approach food allergy prevention."--PFMN(24)

NEW STUDY BRAGS ON PEANUTS A new study published in FOOD & FUNCTION by Dr. Joe Vinson of the University of Scranton, PA shows that the total nut consumption (tree nuts and peanuts) in the United States was estimated at 12.9 grams per day, which is similar to the 2007 European Union consumption of 11.1 grams per day. Dr. Vinson reported in the study that peanuts comprised 65 percent of the nut consumption in the United States and 45 percent in the European Union. Dr. Vins...on surmises that the relative low consumption of nuts in the daily diet might stem from many people being unaware that nuts are such a healthful food. Others may be concerned about gaining weight from a food so high in fat and calories. But he points out that nuts contain healthful polyunsaturated and mono-saturated fats rather than artery-clogging saturated fat. Dr. Vinson's research concluded, "Nuts are high in ber, low in saturated fats, high in benecial unsaturated fats, and very high in antioxidants. Nuts are a nutritious snack and food additive providing both nutrients and bioactive antioxidants which provide signicant health benets to the consumer."
