Is there a way to remove perspiration stains? A: Stains from perspiration are usually found on the underarm area of a garment. However, any area that contacts the body may have such stains. Perspiration contains fats, oils, and moisture containing impurities that may vary from one person to another. The stain may be invisible at first but with age and the heat of finishing after cleaning will oxidize and turn yellow. An untreated perspiration stain on silk may cause the fabr...ic to become severely tendered and to deteriorate. In the case of a drycleanable garment, the remaining stain often contains water-soluble impurities and can usually be removed by your drycleaner. Your drycleaner uses special detergents and formulas to remove perspiration stains. These procedures, however, may cause shrinkage or texture change in your garment. Thus, your drycleaner may ask for your consent before attempting stain removal. Consumers can control and often prevent damage from perspiration by performing frequent cleaning and stain removal and/or by wearing antiperspirants, perspiration shields, or undergarments. See more

Taking Care of your Clothes in the Summer Sometimes even the most innocent-looking products can bring worry to your relaxation wardrobe. Ward off unnecessary stress with these quick tips. Tropical Threads Potential Problem: Major color changes can occur in Hawaiian-style shirts, turning khaki garments green, as shown above. Linen clothing may shrink, fade, or distort. ... Clothing Care: Don't assume elegant tropical shirts must be dry cleaned. Shirts with "wash" labels may lose a component color through dry cleaning. Use a gentle cycle and warm water for linen, then dry on a rack or hanger to minimize shrinkage. Extra ironing will be necessary. Antiperspirant Potential Problem: Build-up from deodorant and antiperspirant products can cause fiber damage and yellowing. Blue and green on silk and wool are particularly prone. Aluminum chloride can weaken fibers in cotton, linen, rayon, and some synthetic blends, leaving holes during cleaning. Clothing Care: Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application. Avoid overuse and allow antiperspirant/deodorant to dry before dressing. Soiled garments should be washed or dry cleaned as soon as possible. Sunblock and Suntan Lotions Potential Problem: Dyes and oils in suntan/sunblock lotions can stain clothing. This color loss or change may not appear until after you clean your clothes. Clothing Care: Avoid many stains by following the directions on the bottle, allow the lotions to dry before dressing, and wash your hands before handling clothes. Swimwear Potential Problem: Chlorine in pools, spas, and hot tubs can damage spandex used in swimwear. Clothing Care: Rinse your suit after wearing and follow the care label's instructions. Self-Tanning Lotions Potential Problem: Self-tanners may discolor anything they touch! Light tan, brown, or yellow staining on the cuffs, collar fold, and neckband, and upper button areas, are typical. Clothing Care: Follow the instructions carefully, being sure to wash your hands immediately and allow your skin time to dry before dressing. If the product gets on your clothes, wash them as soon as possible, as these stains can be difficult to remove. Insect Repellents Potential Problem: Repellents usually will not damage most fibers; however, some products contain alcohol and can cause color loss or color change on fabrics such as acetate and rayon. Clothing Care: Read the label carefully, especially if applying directly to clothing.

There are various processes that can be used to clean clothes. The basics are hand washing, machine washing, and drycleaning. Hand Washing involves soaking the item in water and detergent to gently remove soils from the fabric. This method is very restrictive, and has very little or no agitation. Machine Washing garments are cleaned in a machine with water and detergent. Bleach and/or other laundry additives may be used. The garments are subjected to mechanical action by an a...gitator. Although there are several different cycles available on most washing machines, they are not as gentle as hand washing. Wetcleaning is the professional process of removing soils from garments and other textile items through the use of water in specialized equipment. This equipment allows the precise control of additives (such as detergents) water level, temperature and rotation speed. Careful control of these factors is necessary to prevent shrinkage, loss of color, and fabric distortion. Drycleaning uses fluids to remove soils and stains from fabric. The term drycleaning is misleading; it is called drycleaning because the fluid contains little or no water and does not penetrate the fibers like water. Common solvents currently used for drycleaning include perchloroethylene (perc for short), GreenEarth, Solvon K4 and petroleum or other hydrocarbon based solvents. In most cases, garments are cleaned and dried in the same machine they go in dry and come out dry. This process is followed by finishing procedures using special equipment, such as presses and puff irons.

Six Tips to Stop Stains from Setting We love removing stains and bringing your treasured garments back to their best appearance. Help us do our best for you with the following pointers: 1. Avoid letting stains get comfortable. Try not to put items away with spills or stains on it. The warmth of a closet and exposure to natural or artificial light and the atmosphere can contribute to setting a stain.... 2. Catch stains before they set. Bring in a stained garment as soon as possible, preferably within a few days, to prevent stains from setting. 3. Avoid ironing or drying stained or soiled clothes. Ironing will set stains and drive the soil deeper into the fabric. It's best to have soiled clothes cleaned before ironing. Heat from ironing or drying can help some invisible stains like ginger ale oxidize and become more noticeable like the image on the right above. Setting also makes stains like this harder to successfully remove. 4. Test for colorfastness before attempting home stain removal with water or cleaning fluid to avoid creating a faded area or streak. Wet an inconspicuous area, such as an inside seam, and blot with a paper towel to make sure the color is fast. 5. Avoid rubbing stains, especially when attempting to remove a stain from silk. Blot the stained area. This will help remove the staining substance without spreading the stain and will avoid damaging the fabric. 6. Let us know of the location of specific stains and any procedures you have used to remove them, even if the stains are no longer visible. We appreciate the opportunity to make your clothes (and you!) look and feel their very best. We look forward to working with you to keep your wardrobe at its finest.
