Willys M38 project update. Houston We Have A Problem!! Went to drain and refill the transmission and transfer case late yesterday. Found lots of bronze teeth and shavings in the oil. Slid the synchronizer hub back off of third gear (nose or clutch gear) and this is what I found. No teeth left on the blocking ring. I have never in 37 years seen this on a third gear. That is why I didn't look at it to begin with. Once the oil was down far enough the reverse idler gear was shot. So everything comes back apart to rebuild the transmission. The picture is before and after. I went ahead and replaced the reverse idler gear and shaft, both bearings, first and reverse, Nose gear bearings, and both blocking rings. Tony said mockingly "so what have we learned?" Yep, next time I won't get in such a hurry.
Just arrived this morning at Quarter Ton Parts, Parking brake backing plates brand new production. These fit the very late Willys MB, CJ2A, CJ3A, CJ3B and 4x4 truck and wagons. 56.00 plus shipping. We have them listed on Ebay as well as our web sight. https://quartertonparts.com/
Willys M38 project update. Installed the exhaust, some U-joints in the propeller shafts, the propeller shafts, and the idler arm and linkage for the clutch. Steering box is next on the list. Look Out Tony, I'm catching up pretty quickly....lol
M38 project update. Finished installing the transfer case seals and new rear companion yolk. The old one had a groove worn into it on the seal surface. Also the sealant on the rear output splines keeps the gear dope from oozing out around the splines when the companion yolk is installed. The parking brake shoes were very nice (just dirty) and didn't need to be replaced. Went ahead and installed the power pack this morning.
Willys M38 Update. Lots of cleaning, new fuel pump, oil lines, PCV valve and plumbing, Water pump, head studs and nuts, Crossover tube, Thermostat, by pass hose and bibs. Oil canister bracket....Now the other side today. Just to be clear on this build. I am actually building the under hood stuff and wiring like a CJ3A and not an M38. There are quite a few differences in the two. The CJ3A way is much cheaper and much easier for the museum to deal with when they get the jeep. Of course the body and outside will be dead on correct.
