Something you may not know about us at QCC is that we have an extensive collection of books laying around on all sorts of things related to photography. One of my favorite things to do at the office is browse through old reference books, whether they are about technical applications or surveys of artwork. Here are four that caught my eye today (from bottom to top): Erich Salomon's Portrait of an Age, Al Gruen's Contact Sheet, Dennis Kitchen's Our Smallest Towns, and the gla...morous publication from Amherst Media: Make-Up Techniques for Photography. These books are all interesting to me for different reasons, but I am particularly invested in Portrait of an Age and Our Smallest Towns because they read like social documentaries. I think that books like these are a great way to glimpse into the past not only because of the content they contain, but additionally the use of language. Portrait of an Age was published in the 60s, and it certainly reads differently from the wildly-amusing 2001 publication of Make-Up Techniques. Honestly, that book is worth flipping through if just for the photo examples of what "not" to do, according to early 2000s fashion. Victor Hasselblad, the Swedish father of the beautiful and highly-esteemed Hasselblad camera, lived to see his creation make its way to space during the Mercury program led by NASA in 1962. Thanksgiving is right around the corner; and for many of us, that means time spent indoors with friends and family, perhaps taking part in that age-old tradition of going around the table and reflecting on the things we are most grateful for. With gratitude comes humility, and with humility comes responsibility. In the photography world, responsibility manifests in a number of decisions that the artist makes when creating images. Perhaps one of the most important is in repre...sentation. But representation does not necessarily mean the same thing in every context, and the intention of one project may vary greatly from that of another, skewing what constitutes responsible portrayals of the human condition from one image to the next. When the opportunity presents itself, it is both the responsibility and honor of the viewer to consider different ways the artist chooses to communicate representation in their work. We encourage you to take some time to explore the work of Dawoud Bey that is currently available for viewing at the High Museum in light of this conversation. With the help of the online gallery, anyone can enjoy viewing online exhibitions from artists all around the world. Bey's "An American Project" is a collection of select works spanning his 45-year career, and emphasizes the "engagement with the young Black subject and African American history". Hey folks - long time, no see! QCC has recently added a new member to our team of camera enthusiasts, and she can't wait to get involved in the community! Hannah graduated from The University of the South in May 2020, and studied both Literature and Photography.
