Packing an EMERGENCY KIT for you and your family is a must!! It is so important to be prepared for any inclement weather situation! You can purchase kits already packed up for you or make one up yourself. Here are some of the essential items I packed into one for my family. I used a sturdy backpack I purchased locally. And while I keep a file of all my family’s important documents (birth certificates, passports, medical records etc) in our home fire proof safe, I keep all o...f it in a portable file so I can throw it into the backpack in case of emergency. I also made an emergency checklist for things I need to remember to do or take with me (medicine, baby or pet food etc) and I keep that in the backpack along with these items: Flashlight (extra batteries) First aid kit Battery powered radio (with extra batteries) or a hand crank radio. Whistle A multi-utility tool / knife Glow sticks Garbage bags Twist ties/ zip ties Duct tape Baby wipes Bottled water Non-perishable food meal pouches (these can been purchased or made) Paper and pencil Waterproof matches Paper towels Face Masks (like the kind you get at the doctor) Sewing kit Tissues/TP Candle Personal hygiene items (soap, toothbrush, toothpaste etc) Hand towel Leather palm gloves (one pair) Blanket (if you roll this it makes it easier to fit inside or zip tie to the outside. * add any item that you think might come in handy in the event you have to rush from your home to a find shelter elsewhere. Also, Be prepared when heavy rains hit! Don’t let flooding catch you off guard. Pay attention to flood alerts, things can change quickly and it’s better to be over prepared then to be caught scrambling to fix the situation after the fact!
