One of the good guysan oak snake! The oak snake's average size is around 4'-5', but they can grow to 7' in length. In early fall, bucks can be observed rubbing thier antlers against small trees to remove the velvet that has been growing on their antlers throughout the summer.... That's what got this buck all tangled up! Urban Wildlife Technician Shane was able to respond and quickly cut the deer loose. #UrbanWildlife #WhiteTailedDeer #BackyardWildlife
These limbs and woody plant vegetation were encroaching into these firebreaks and road systems. We knocked them down efficently to increase ease of travel. We all know a limb hitting you in the face or fingers on a cold winter day is among the worst!!! #LookingForwardToCoolerDays #LandManagement #Stewardship #WildLifeManagement #RedHillsRegion #JohnVannTheLandMan
Due to all the wet weather this year, these perimeter firebreaks were skipped during the summer mowing schedule. We got the brush mowed down and ready for fall firebreaks! -Coming Soon Check out our next coming video of us widening road systems with the tree cutter! #LandManagement #BrushMowing #Stewardship #Forestry #SouthGeorgia #RedHillsRegion #SlashPine #VadaGA #LoblollyPine #JohnVannTheLandMan
Healthy stand of pines on a tract managed intensively for timber. This cool temperature night fire kills out the understory without scorching any pine needles. #Landstewards #Landmanagement #Prescribedfire #RedHillsRegion #SouthGeorgia #Forestry #JohnVannTheLandMan
Installed over 1,500ft of 2inch PVC burried 3ft deep. Ride-on trenchers make for quick work! After packing in with the trencher tires, we fine-tuned everything with the box blade and re-packed. Turned out beautiful! #Irrigation #LandManagement #RedHillsRegion #WaterLines #CropManagement #LandStewards #WildLifeManagement #JohnVannTheLandMan

I'm going to get in trouble for this post! No, I did not bring this little Oak Snake inside...he found his own way in; however, I'm not sure the wife is going to approve of me posting this picture of her in the jammies without her permission, but I just couldn't help it....Here's how it played out...there was a loud squeal, followed by fear, followed by John Help...followed by please John, followed by quit laughing and help me out, followed by John!!!! Help me!!!! Followed by... Now!!!!! John!!!!! .....but I just couldn't help....I was laughing too hard at the variety of emotions a woman can make within 30seconds.... Big Mistake...Ya'll wish me well! She finally had to get a broom and sweep him out...I was still laughing too hard to help from all the reactions. No snakes were harmed in the making of this post. #BellyLaughing #DogHouse #SomeThingsAreLearnedTheHardWay #However #OakSnakesEatMice #RedHillsRegion #PineFloorsAreTheBest #LandManagement #PrayersFor #JohnVannTheLandMan

Someone posted this in a group but I was unable to share their post. This deer got his antler stuck in his back leg. Apparently, a man was sitting on his back porch when he heard the struggle and grunting. This is what he walked up on. He was able to free the buck, who ran off with no problem. He’ll be a little sore but I’m confident he will make a full recovery. These guys are used to getting gored by one another during the rut. #NatureStrong #WhiteTailedBuckDeer #WildLifeManagement #JohnVannTheLandMan

This old fence was hidden with years of un-maintained overgrowth. We got it all pulled out safely and the remaining debris and vegetation cleared and beautifully cleaned! #LandManagement #FenceRemoval #LandClearing #RedHillsRegion #DebrisCleanup #JohnVannTheLandMan

Containerized slash pine seedlings from IFCO Seedlings! This beautiful pine prefers acidic soils and is more tolerant of wet sites than other pines. Coming soon, check out our video of these seedlings being machine planted! #reforestation #landmanagement #stewardship #JohnVannTheLandMan
Fire science sounds cool, right? It's also key to keeping prescribed fires safe and effective. Fire practitioners work to apply the latest science and technology to continuously improve prescribed fire planning and safety.
GLIMPSES OF MIGRATION #2 **Turn sound on to hear the deer talking** Have any of you seen animals use a wildlife-friendly fence, or watched an animal get caught?... In the second installment of our new "Glimpses" series, 20 deer cross under a beautiful wildlife-friendly fence. This fence is a great example of private land stewardship on the Red Desert to Hoback Migration Corridor. The rancher has installed a high ~18" bottom wire for scooting under, a top wire at 42" or less, and lots of space between the top two wires to prevent jumpers from getting tangled. It makes a difference: Watch at :55 seconds where a doe makes a standing jump and taps the top wire. She's in no danger of getting tangled thanks to the fence design. In all, the safe-crossers in this group included 13 adults, and seven smaller yearlings or fawns-of-the year including a potential set of twin fawns, and one male fork-horn. Across this whole corridor, migrating deer contend with about 100 different fence crossings. The good news is that people have been working hard on fencing retrofits to make migration easier for animals. We'll have more about that in a post later this week featuring The Nature Conservancy in Wyoming.... About the clip: UW student researcher Tanner Warder caught this clip in Sublette County in mid-October 2020 as mule deer headed south before the deep snows hit. Funding for this clip comes from the Muley Fanatic Foundation, Wyoming Research Scholars Program, and Kauffman Lab of the Wyoming Coop Unit.
