Let's talk Sierra Leone (Why is Sierra Leone Classed as a "Poor Country" with high level of poverty among the people? Sierra Leone is rich in mineral resources.... Diamonds, gold, bauxite, rutile and iron ore are known to exist in large quantities. Political stability has led to a revival of economic activity such as the rehabilitation of bauxite and rutile mining, which are set to benefit from planned tax incentives. Several offshore oil discoveries were announced in 2009 and 2010. The development on these reserves, which could be significant, is still years away. The rise of mineral prices up to 2011 led to strong interest by international mining companies in Sierra Leone, resulting in a surge of new mining licenses and exploration. Revenues from the oil, gas and mining sector are small at present: US $27m in 2011 up from US $7.5 in 2010, with oil and gas revenues outstripping mining for the first time. Sierra Leone has a long history of mining as its major economic activity. For years it was referred to as the "Land of Iron and Diamonds." The country is endowed with vast and varied mineral resources, including diamonds, gold, rutile, ilmenite, zircon, iron ore, bauxite and petroleum, but it has not managed to exploit their potential, due partly to the 11-year civil war that ended in 2002. Before the war, the mining sector contributed 70 percent of foreign exchange earnings, 20 percent of the nation's GDP and 15 percent of fiscal revenues. The sector has seen a significant overall recovery since the end of the war in terms of both operations and output. Mining accounted for almost 60 percent of export revenues in 2010, including $132 million in diamonds, $33 million for rutile and $31 million for bauxite. These figures represent an increase in mineral sector value after setbacks in 2008 that included operation disruptions at the major diamond mine and, separately, at the major rutile mine. The mining sector provides employment and livelihood to over 135,000 workers, the overwhelming majority of whom are engaged in artisanal, small-scale mining operations. Artisanal mining constitutes an estimated 84 percent of total diamond exports from Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone does not currently produce any petroleum, but there are offshore prospects. On 6 September, 2009, Anadarko Petroleum Corporation announced an offshore deepwater discovery at the Venus exploration well. This is the first deepwater test in the Sierra Leone-Liberian Basin. The evaluation of the well to determine the quantity of oil and its commercial viability is ongoing. Anadarko operates the Venus well, with a 40 percent working interest. Co-owners in the discovery include Woodside, with a 25 percent working interest; Repsol, at 25 percent working interest; and Tullow, with 10 percent working interest. Did you know that Queen Elizabeth II Quay in Freetown Sierra Leone was estimated at 1,470,000 to construct in the 1950s? Queen Elizabeth II Quay, also known ...as QE II Quay and by residents as the Deep Water Quay, is a locality in Freetown, Sierra Leone. It is located on a promontory called Fourah Point (also known variously as FarranPoint, Farren Point, and Foura Point) on the southern bank of the estuary of the Sierra Leone River between Destruction Bay and Cline Bay within the suburb of Cline Town directly to the east of central Freetown. It is the larger of two harbors within Freetown, the other harbor known as Government Wharf, Freetown Port, or simply "the harbor" and is Freetown's more centrally located harbor. Queen Elizabeth II Quay has sometimes been the called the "third largest natural harbor in the world" this is inaccurate in two respects: 1.) the QE II Quay is not itself a natural harbor but a man-made port or "quay", and 2.) the quay is a very small feature of the river estuary on which it was built it is this estuary which has carved out what is the largest natural harbor on the African continent. It still puts this harbor behind Port Jackson in Sydney, Australia, and several natural harbors claiming the title for world's second largest, including Halifax Harbour in Nova Scotia, Poole Harbour in Dorset, southern England, and Cork Harbour in County Cork, Ireland. The government of Sierra Leone assumed management of the Quay in 1964. It decided to privatize the property in 2007, thus converting the port from a "service" port into a "land lord" port. Construction of the quay began in 1953 on what was once called Fourah Bay. Estimates in the British House of Commons in 1955 were that the quay would cost around 1,470,000. By 1960 the entire bay was filled in, creating a large uninhabited reclamation area to the south. The final structure is 1,067 metres (3,501 ft) end to end with a draught allowance of 30 feet (9.1 m). The Sierra Leone Railway used to have a large terminal and headquarters nearby but these were removed in the 1970s. The quay includes six numbered berths designed to accommodate either passenger or cargo ships, and has several warehouses and extensive outdoor storage space.
