****IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ! **** How to take care of a real Christmas tree When a Christmas tree is cut, more than half its weight is water. If you take care of your tree properly, it should last through Christmas. Here are some tips for caring for your tree:... Put your tree in water as soon as possible. If you will not be able to put it up as soon as you get home, just place it in a bucket of water. Don't bruise the cut surface of the trunk or get it dirty. That will affect the ability of the tree to drink water. The first time you put water in your tree, put the hottest tap water that you can get. This will loosen up the sap that has started to form a seal over the trunk. All other times, just add water straight from them tap. You do not need to add bleach, aspirin, Sprite, or any other preservative. Just add water. Water is critical in keeping your tree fresh. Check the water in your tree twice a day for the first few days, especially if you have a Leyland Cypress (they tend to need more water). Never let the level of the water drop below the bottom of the trunk. If you do, the sap will form a seal and the tree will no longer take up water. KEEP AWAY FROM HEAT SOURCES!!!! Do NOT put your tree near a fireplace or heater. It will dry it out quickly and become a fire hazard. If you have to put it near a heat register, just close that register until you take your tree down after Christmas. The cooler the room is maintained, the better the tree will tolerate its stay inside.
