There's a lot for everyone to be thankful for this Memorial Day. But for us especially, it's to able to look back on a year of trial and tumult, frustration and heartbreak, and know we had the good fortune to come out on the other side of a global pandemic stronger than ever and proud of all we've accomplished. So here's a couple of photos looking back on the year that was 2020. We're also incredibly thankful that our indoor reopening this weekend was one of the most successful weekends we have had all pandemic long. And it would never have been possible without y'all. Thank you so much for tiding us over, pulling us though, and helping us keep the lights on through all of it, Athens. Come see us again when you're ready.

Long Post Pt. Deux We look forward to welcoming all of you back inside The Rook and Pawn starting tomorrow! When you do venture back we hope you find things as welcoming and enjoyable as always. You will also find a few things have changed, we are a year older after all....and like all of you....we’ve been through some stuff... 1. New games! You’ll find the Wall of Game stocked full of brand new titles both new and old. We’ve replaced that beaten old copy of Simpsons M...onopoly, added some hot new releases (check out Nidavellir!) and thrown in a few hidden gems for you to enjoy. 2. Expanded menu offerings! We’re open and excited but we’re not quite all the way back. Like a top flight athlete coming back from injury, we need to be sure we ease back into things, we wouldn’t want to pull a hamstring. You’ll find the menu has grown from our takeout and outside-only offerings to include some of the old staples (salads and the Tofu Banh Mi are back!), not to mention the addition of some of the most popular specials we tried out over the last year including the mighty Muffaletta. As we get a few weeks under our belt, we’ll go all-in and have the full Rook and Pawn menu back in action. 3. New pricing structure! Ok, so months before COVID, the management team had begun work on a new pricing scheme for games, the menu, everything. Our prices, particularly for games, had remained unchanged since we opened six years ago. Then COVID came and changed the world. More than a year on and on the eve of reopening to indoor seating we find that, while much has changed about running the business, the need to keep pace with rising costs by changing our prices, has not. We do not know what the next year holds, but we do know we want to continue to pay our staff a competitive wage, to be nimble to account for rapidly changing supply costs, and to continue to build the foundation of the Rook & Pawn to ensure it's a downtown fixture for another six (or 16, or 64) years. We are honored that Athens has embraced us for 6 years now. We can't wait to see you all unfolding game boards, rolling dice, and moving pieces down the hall again - starting tomorrow @ 11am! , R&P

Long Post Alert Mere days before our 6th Anniversary, we are thrilled to announce that The Rook and Pawn will reopen its doors and welcome you for indoor dining and gaming! In light of new CDC guidance and increasing vaccination rates (hooray for science!), The Rook and Pawn will reopen with a limited seating capacity beginning Friday, May 28th. ... We know you have questions: 1.Will masks be required? Masks will not be required when seated at your table, playing games, eating food and enjoying the return of The Rook and Pawn. We will ask that customers wear masks when ordering from the bar, but otherwise, mask wearing for those that are fully vaccinated is entirely optional. 2.What does limited seating capacity mean? As we ease back into the swing of things, The Rook and Pawn will start indoor service with a few less tables down the hallway. This will allow for plenty of room for seated parties. 3.What if I’m not vaccinated? If you have not yet been vaccinated, we ask that you continue physical distancing and continue to wear your mask inside while not eating or drinking, or in the alternative, we still have plenty of outdoor tables for your gaming and Rook and Pawning pleasure. 4.When will you be open? Good news as we will be expanding our service hours to midnight on Friday and Saturday. All other days we will be open from 11am to 10pm. 5.Anything different inside? Yes! New games! New menu items! New cocktails! All of which we will be unveiling and explaining as the week progresses so watch this space. From the beginning of this crisis, The Rook and Pawn has rooted its decisions in science and the guidance of experts. We feel we have acted cautiously, safely and in the best interests of public health and the community. We used these same principles to arrive at this decision and we could not be more excited to see all of you inside on Friday.

Hey y'all, let's talk. We're closing for the week to clean up our cafe and reopen this Friday with a TWIST. We're going to start offering limited indoor seating down our hallway just in time for those Summer heat waves! We'll be updating you all on our guidelines in the coming days, but to answer your question - YES, masks will be required for service, so make sure to bring them with you. Follow this space!

Look, we get it. Celebrating Valentine's Day is hard. Sometimes you have to work those nights, maybe serving the dinner daters their champagne. It's too expensive and you can't afford a nice evening. When it rains, your plans for a socially-distanced outside day hike with your couples friends get all washed out. And your plans are usually last minute... Let's make it easy for you!
