Thank you to Steve Stroud and the Roswell Inc. team for inviting Elaine to participate in this presentation. History is alive in Roswell
In Memory of Phillip Mansell, Sr. Phil Mansell (1951-2021) was a dear friend and contributor of the Roswell Historical Society. We were very sorry to hear of his passing. The Society is grateful for the many images of the Mansell family and their businesses that he donated to the Research Library and Archives. His presentation to the Society in 2018 about Roswell and his family was my very first membership meeting program as President of RHS and it drew the largest crowd we h...ad seen in years. We honor Phil with the following photograph of Phil and the Mansell family. Kevin Bamford- President, Roswell Historical Society Photograph: Phil Mansell (right, front) with his mother (Pinkie), father (Walton), sister (Susan) and uncle (C.B. Gone Fishing... Two men are fishing in the Chattahoochee River, c. 1900. The view is of the covered bridge facing towards Roswell from Sandy Springs. Laurel Mills is seen on the banks of the river in Roswell.
Wreathes Across America was a little different this year, No public ceremony, No community volunteers and unfortunately No Honor Guard, but very thankful to Janet Johnson and the Cemetery Crew for making this special day a reality despite our 2020 challenges. If you are in the area, please stop by the cemetery- it's beautiful this time of year.
Please check out our Christmas blog on our fabulous new website, very exciting times. https://www.roswellhistoricalsociety.org//christmas-in-ros
It was 100 years ago that the 19th Amendment passed, giving Women the right to vote. We celebrate another milestone with the first Vice President elect, Kamala Harris.

Okay, we have to Social Distance, but here are some virtual HUGS to our veterans! Happy Veterans Day EVERYDAY! Nothing will ever replace a hug and we all miss hugging you. Thank you for all you have risked, done and sacrificed for us.
As we approach Veterans Day, we want to spotlight the Veteran’s Memorial Monument that was erected in 1949 in the triangle where South Atlanta, Magnolia, Canton, and Alpharetta Streets come together, c. 1990 with Roswell Mayor W.L. PUG Mabry
Give a virtual hug to a Roswellian veteran. What is their name and where did they serve? We want to thank them! HUGS!
To salute our local veterans, one being Clarence Mansell. During WWII he served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific. Read about drive thru windows, Egg Acres, and real estate. https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/atlanta/obituary.aspx
For Memorial Day and Veterans’ Day, the members of the Roswell Historical Society bi-annually refresh the American Flags on over 200 veterans’ graves at the Old Roswell Cemetery. We are incredibly grateful to our veterans and the sacrifices they and their families have made for us. Come visit the Cemetery and see the beauty as Veterans Day is this Wednesday 11/11/2020, located at 100 Woodstock St, Roswell, GA 30075 Caption: We gathered in front of 2nd Lt. Hugh Dorsey Mitchell’s monument. He gave his life in the defense of the Anzio beachhead in Italy during World War II.

Murder at Mimosa! Grab a martini and some kettle corn, and join us for this spooky evening of pre-Halloween fun! Did you know that Mimosa Hall was the inspirat...ion for a best-selling murder mystery novel? Join us as we host a virtual celebration of Who Killed Aunt Maggie, a mystery written in 1939 by Medora Field Perkerson. Inspired by the success of Gone with the Wind, written by her good friend and Atlanta Journal colleague, Margaret Mitchell, Perkerson decided to write her own novel about a murder occurring in beautiful old "Wisteria Hall." Who Killed Aunt Maggie was so popular that Hollywood made it into a movie the following year! Our virtual celebration will include readings from the novel and clips from the 1940 movie, plus an introduction from Dr. Harwood about how Perkerson chose Mimosa Hall as the backdrop for her novel. Please follow this link to register for this free event. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/125563217965 "There seemed something sinister about the place."

In July 1864 during the Atlanta campaign General William T. Sherman ordered the approximately 400 Roswell mill workers, mostly women, arrested as traitors and shipped as prisoners to the North with their children. The meaning behind us celebrating Labor Day was due to the Labor Movement from the 1880s when people were granted fair wage, safety at work and age restrictions on child workers. https://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org//deportation-roswell-m
