DAN KEELS SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS - SANDY SPRINGS ROTARY FOUNDATION On Monday, December 20, 2021, Gene Jordan, President of the Sandy Springs Rotary Foundation, Inc. presented the annual program on the foundation's Dan Keels Scholarships. The Dan Keels Scholarship is a scholarship program established in honor of the late Dan Keels who, as a member of the Rotary Club of Sandy Springs and as Chaplain of Northside Hospital, gave extensively to his community throughout his lifetime an...d inspired people through his lifetime of community service. The foundation is an active 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and contributions are tax deductible. Its board of directors consists of members of the Rotary Club of Sandy Springs. Current directors are Gene Jordan, President, Bill Snellings, Treasurer, and Sally McLaughlin, Secretary. For 32 years, the Sandy Springs Rotary Foundation, Inc. has celebrated and encouraged young adults who embrace Rotary International’s motto of Service Above Self and who exhibit exemplary academic, community service and leadership qualities. Established in 1989 by the Rotary Club of Sandy Springs, the Sandy Springs Rotary Foundation, Inc. operates exclusively for charitable and educational purposes. Many of the recipients have exhibited leadership qualities while participating in their high school’s Interact Club. On Wednesday November 11, 2020 members of the Sandy Springs Rotary Club met with Principal Laurie Woodruff. The RCSS has been active in serving our community fo...r over 48 years. Education has always been one of our highest priorities for service projects. We are incredibly pleased to provide eight hotspot devices to enable distance learning for students who may not have internet access at home. Principal Laurie Woodruff responded during the presentation by saying: Thank you all for coming out to visit Sandy Springs Middle School today to share in the excitement of providing hotspots to our families! I feel fortunate to have an amazing organization such as Rotary Club of Sandy Springs invested in supporting our school and community. I know that our partnership will continue to flourish, with the students of SSCMS being the ultimate beneficiaries.

The third project is asking the public for nominations of outstanding first responders for the Rotary International Medals of Honor. These must be active members of the Sandy Springs Police Department or Fire Department including EMTs/Paramedics. Three honorees will be selected - one from each area. Candidates are those who in the nominee’s opinion have gone beyond the call of duty in providing extraordinary service assisting our citizens and business owners, protecting pro...perty, or who have contributed significantly to the public safety profession over the last two years during COVID, civil unrest or other emergency situations. Based on public input the club will select the Honorees who will be recognized at a future event at the Rotary Club of Sandy Springs.
