If you remember Sacred Heart, Marist, and the Imperial Hotel! On Ivy Street! Here is a really nice photo of Sacred Heart Church and the Marist School buildin...g next door. This property was assembled by the Marist Order back in the early 1900’s. It was the site of Marist School, the Marist residence building, and Sacred Heart Church for decades under the Marist religious order. Later a grade school and other facilities were added. The site became the home of our St. Joseph High School in Atlanta from 1960 to 1976. At that time the six acre property was sold by the Archbishop of Atlanta. All of the buildings in this complex shared similar architectural features and were constructed with red brick exteriors. Very lovely look on then Ivy Street. Certainly we are glad the Church remains, as all the rest was torn down and is now the backside of SunTrust Plaza and its parking garage! The Imperial Hotel also remains in the background, behind the church spires. It was abandoned for some time and became just a derelict building. Later, in the early nineties, the building was part of a Resolution Trust Corporation (RTC) sale after being part of a failed loan that the federal government bailed out. As a lawyer, I actually worked on the purchase of the Imperial as part of an RTC property package back in 1993 or so. The Imperial was spun off to other developers from that package. It was fully renovated and became an operating residential facility for the working poor. Now the Imperial Hotel building is in use as apartments and housing. An amazing cycle for this property of decline and revival over nearly a century in downtown Atlanta. There's a lot more history here - the Sacred Heart Girls School, the St. Joe's Infirmary on the next block, the Nursing School, the Frances Hotel across Ivy Street, Pete and Ted's, Dale's Cellar --- so please add your stories!!!
