Sandy Springs Cadet Squadron is proud of two cadets that have received their Billy Mitchell Award. Congratulations C/2dLt Cavanaugh and C/2dLt Isakson on your recent promotion! Your hard work has paid off!
New Guidelines from GA Wing.
Sandy Springs Cadet Squadron welcomed our newest Cadet Commander C/Capt Braun. We had a great turnout of former SSCS cadets and invited guests. # the last free event prior to the remask order
Sandy Springs Cadets have been learning about Drones. Starting with Cadet led presentations and Simulator rotations during meeting time to SUAS Flight time out on the field today.
We had a great time this past weekend supporting VFW Post 10822 Dunwoody Sandy Springs Georgia at their first annual Car Show! We helped them and they allowed us to set up a recruiting booth. It was a fun way to 'reboot' our public service activities after a long year of COVID-19 restrictions. Georgia Wing, Civil Air Patrol Civil Air Patrol
Look out for the Snoopy Squadron this coming Saturday at the VFW Post 10822's Car Show, from 11am to 2pm! We'll be hosting a display booth with a special 'vehicular tribute' to one of Georgia's legendary CAP leaders, CAP Lt Col Ron Bradford. #vfw #carshow #civilairpatrol DeKalb County Cadet Squadron
We're back! Our squadron has returned to holding in-person unit meetings, while 'simulcasting' on Zoom for those who can't attend yet. Tonight was Physical Training night, with a debrief on our participation in last weekend's Search and Rescue Exercise and Field Training Exercise which trained our personnel in vital Emergency Services skills.

With the world focused on recent flights to space, the Moon, and even Mars, we pause to honor the intersection of squadron history with space history: Patches in Space! 10 years ago today at 4:53:24 PM Eastern time, Space Shuttle Discovery launched on it's final spaceflight. USAF Astronaut and former Georgia Wing cadet Eric Boe honored us by carrying some of our patches with him. Thanks, Eric!
Mach 2! On this day in 1953, famed NASA test pilot A. Scott Crossfield became the first human in history to fly twice the speed of sound: https://www.thisdayinaviation.com/20-november-1953/ . According to the NASA website, "Throughout his life, Crossfield advocated aerospace education and was a strong supporter of the Civil Air Patrol (USAF auxiliary) and, in particular, CAP's aerospace education program. He created the A. Scott Crossfield Aerospace Education Teacher of th...e Year Award to recognize and reward teachers for outstanding accomplishments in aerospace education ... Additionally, CAP senior members can qualify for the A. Scott Crossfield Aerospace Education Award. This recognition program is for CAP senior members who have earned the Master Rating in the Aerospace Education Officer Specialty Track." Our squadron's link to this aviation hero comes from his tragic death after the inflight breakup of his single-engine Cessna 210A on 19 April 2006. A ground team from the Sandy Springs squadron discovered the first pieces of his plane the next day.
This post comes from Mark Kirkman, our former squadron cadet commander in the 1980s, NASA astronaut instructor, and resident Space Shuttle expert. If interested, use the instructions below to sign up, and tune in tonight at 8pm Eastern for what should be a spirited presentation!
We may be lucky tonight to be able to see the ISS over Altanta tonight!

In memory of USAF Staff Sgt Conner Kendall, a former cadet at our squadron. He died in an accident on May 7, 2020. Staff Sgt Kendall was a proud alumnus of Sandy Springs Cadet Squadron. He commanded our color guard to a dominant win at the 2012 Georgia Wing Cadet Competition, leading our team to win 4 out of the 7 events. Conner joined the US Air Force and was an avionics mechanic on the HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopter at Moody AFB, GA. ... The Flyin' 45th sends its condolences to SSgt Kendall's family and friends in CAP and beyond.
In case you missed it, the USAF Thunderbirds and USN Blue Angels flyover in Sandy Springs today!
Attention! Tomorrow May 2nd at 1:35PM the USAF Thunderbirds and USN Blue Angels are going to be flying over Atlanta! Be sure to be on the lookout!
Thanks to Col. Van Buren, MSgt Ozyilmaz, c/Maj Benater, and c/MSgt Cavanaugh for their hard work on today's mission at the Peachtree-Dekalb Airport! Sandy Springs responded and found the ELT!
Civil Air Patrol units from Georgia and Tennessee Wings responded to assist in the search for this aircraft. Members from the Sandy Springs and Peachtree City squadrons performed duties on the scene.
Our small squadron brought the 2nd-most CAP members to Exercise FROSTBITE 2020, Georgia Wing's annual winter Search and Rescue training weekend in North Georgia. 5 SSCS cadets and 4 senior members braved nasty weather to practice and teach ground SAR skills.
Kennesaw Mountain 5K. Cadets participated in Color Guard, the water station and raising the flag at the Visitor Center.
