Emergencies come in all shapes and sizes. Yesterday a concerned homeowner in Sandy Springs called 911 to report a black bear roaming the neighborhood. SSFD personnel responded to the location and were able to quickly locate the bear. With the assistance of the Department of Natural Resources the bear was safely tranquilized and moved out of the area to be relocated to a more natural environment.

For those who are planning to light their own fireworks, SSFD offers the following safety advice: Fireworks and alcohol don't mix - please don't drink and strike Wear close-toed shoes to protect your feet Wear eyeglasses or goggles to protect your eyes Wear long-sleeve shirts and long pants to avoid burns to arms and legs (the most common fireworks injury)- avoid certain fabrics like dry-wicking materials.... Sparklers are popular for children - have them use a plastic cup to shield their hands Last year SSFD was interviewed by Headline News, here's a link to the story. https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=575341806462034 See more

This week is Winter Weather Preparedness Week in Georgia. Knowing the difference between advisories, watches and warnings can help you prepare. A Watch is g...enerally issued 24-72 hours in advance of hazardous winter weather. A Warning is issued when hazardous winter weather is occurring, is imminent, or has a very high probability of taking place An Advisory is issued when the wintery stuff is expected over the next 12 to 36 hours, but criteria falls just below warning levels. The National Weather Service has additional details at https://www.weather.gov/bgm/WinterTerms

Zeta Update: Crews continue to work to clear the MANY downed trees and power lines around the city. The map shows the sites we were working on early this morn...ing. Since then, we've cleared many locations - but have also added as additional trees taking power lines have added to our numbers. More than 150 trees are no longer calling Sandy Springs home due to Zeta. Georgia Power has mobilized in areas throughout the city. Work is happening. We appreciate your patience.

With Thanksgiving right around the corner here is a good reminder that you should never throw water on a grease fire. Use an ABC dry chemical extinguisher, pot lid, baking soda, or heavy wet towel to smother the fire instead. Don’t hesitate to call 911!!

The Sandy Springs Police Department would like to remind residents to be aware of unethical contractors taking advantage of the damages caused by hurricane Zeta.... It is typical for scammers to go door-to-door offering to help get your property repaired. How can a homeowner avoid becoming a victim from these scammers? -Don’t hire people who drop off flyers in your mailbox or ring your door bell and tell you your roof or gutter need fixing -Ask candidates for a list of the last 10 jobs they did and how you can get in touch with those homeowners to verify. -Ask what kind of insurance each contractor carries -Get more than one estimate -Don’t be pushed into signing a contract right away -Get everything in writing -Ask to see the contractor’s driver’s license and write down the number and license plate on his or her vehicle -Perform a google search of the contractor and or company’s name -Check the Better Business Bureau for information on the contractor and or company These storm chasers usually offer to pay your homeowner’s insurance deductible for you so they can begin doing work on your roof and bill your insurer for it. This might sound like a great and convenient idea, but it could be dangerous to you and your wallet. Remember, if its too good to be true... it’s usually not a good idea. We ask you PLEASE share this post, especially with your elderly loved ones who are often targeted and become victims of these types of scam. #scams #scamalerts #scamalert #hurricanezeta #hurricanezeta2020 #beware #elderlylovedones

The sun is rising, and the winds are starting to calm. Unfortunately, more than 80 of our trees are destined for mulch. As predicted, Zeta came in fast and fi...erce with rain and intense winds. If you woke to coffee by candlelight, embrace the mood. It is going to take Georgia Power some time to restore the widespread outages, and they are still hampered by the lingering winds. We also caution all about driving out and about at this time. Zeta blew a lot of debris, and it's a mess out there. If you must be out on the roadways, use added caution. We remain under the Tropical Storm Warning until 11 a.m. Our Flash Flood Warning stays in effect until Halloween. We have a long list of closures related to trees and trees/power lines down. Note that Georgia Power is handling a LARGE number of outages. With winds gusting over 45 mph and the likelihood of falling trees and powerlines, travel should be limited to essential or emergencies only over the next few hours.

Sandy Springs Fire Department 01.09.2020

Be prepared for potentially strong winds in the area starting Thursday morning. SSFD will have extra units in service to answer emergency requests.

Sandy Springs Fire Department 18.08.2020

WEATHER ALERT! Please prepare for rain and strong winds starting late tonight (10/27/2020) and continuing into Friday morning (10/30/2020) due to Hurricane Zeta. Due to the amount of rain that is forecasted, Fulton County is under a flood watch due to the possibilities of rivers and streams flooding. Sandy Springs Fire will have extra units in service to respond to all emergencies. Also, due to it being fall, leaves from trees are falling. These leaves could cause drains to ...become clogged. Therefore, more roads may begin to flood. Strong wind gusts are also predicted across north and central Georgia. This may cause an increase in downed trees and power lines. REMINDER! If you reach a road where there is standing water, please do not drive through it! Turn around and find another route to your destination. Rain also makes roadways become wet and slippery. Please watch your speed to prevent hydroplaning and to allow you to arrive safely to your destination.

Sandy Springs Fire operates several specialty teams that serve specific functions in emergency operations. One of those teams is our TEMS (tactical EMS team) that supports the North Metro SWAT team. Fire candidates wishing to become part of this team must pass the same tryout procedure as police candidates.

Every year Sandy Springs Fire hosts a group of Georgia Tech graduate students from the bio medical research group. They come, tour the stations and vehicles, learn about the equipment we carry, and how it is used. All in an effort to help develop better equipment and techniques to make our jobs just a bit easier. They are always inquisitive and eager to help and this years group was no exception!
