From the American Federation of Teachers Some key findings: 68 percent of parents and 77 percent of teachers say protecting the health of students and staff should be the primary factor in weighing whether, how and when schools should open their doors for in-person instruction. 59 percent of parents and 64 percent of teachers say they are concerned their school district will move too quickly to fully reopen schools, risking the safety of students, families and teachers. Just 21 percent of parents and 14 percent of teachers say schools should reopen on the normal in-person basis demanded by President Donald Trump and Education Secretary Betsy DeVosand significant majorities reject the administration’s plan to strip federal aid from schools that don’t comply. 86 percent of teachers say they have purchased personal protective equipment for themselves and 11 percent have purchased PPE for their students. Parents think remote learning has had a more negative impact on their children’s social-emotional health than on their academic progress. Most parents feel an adult will need to be with their child for remote learning; 3 in 10 of them say it will be difficult to make this happen. Majorities of teachers (60 percent) and parents (54 percent) are not comfortable starting the school year in person, and concern for personal safety is their top concern. When safety protections such as masks, daily deep cleaning and sanitizing, physical distancing and proper ventilation, and the funding to provide them, are in placewhat the AFT has been calling for since April71 percent of parents and 79 percent of teachers are comfortable returning. The results make clear that parents are still very grateful to teachers. And it underscores what we at the AFT have been saying for months: that we all want to get back to in-person learning, but that it should not happen until there are COVID-19 safety measures in place and the funding to pay for them. GA Educators Push for Federal Dollars for Safe Schools, Elections SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Georgia educators are urging Congress to pass new legislation that boosts funding for state and local governments to keep schools and elections safe in the pandemic. Theresa Watson, president of the American Federation of Teachers in Savannah, said the HEROES Act, introduced in the House last month, would bring Georgia about $2 billion in education funding as the state faces major budget gaps f...rom the coronavirus shutdown. Watson said the funding would provide much-needed supplies and equipment to disinfect schools and prevent districts from laying off teachers, custodians and support staff. Theresa Watson, President Savannah Federation of Teachers "With that money, it will guarantee that everybody will be safe," she said, "and they won't have to think about furloughing, or have to think about how they're going to pay their bills or how they're going to eat." The $3 trillion legislation is facing opposition from Senate Republicans, who are concerned that the new spending would balloon the federal deficit to unmanageable levels. The bill also would provide money to improve Georgia's election process. Watson said the state's primary election two weeks ago is an example of why the funding is needed, as voters faced long lines and faulty voting machines. "It was a total disaster," she said. "When I went into the polling area myself, they had six machines but they only were using two, and it made the line very long. We were standing outside, but it just caused a real big problem." Access to voting has become a stormy issue in the Peach State following the 2018 gubernatorial race when GOP Gov. Brian Kemp narrowly defeated Democrat Stacy Abrams.
