Update on The cow. It’s been about 2 and a half weeks now, and no owner has come forward. We have learned a couple of things in this time. After speaking with a few officers from Central Precinct, we learned that she has been on the loose since at least November-if not longer. They were calling her Penelope.... Chatham County Animal Services has taken over the adoption process. We have also learned that technically by Georgia law, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office takes ownership of the cow. (Who knew) We contacted Sheriff Whelcher; when he got done laughing, he asked if he needed to come get her. After talking with him, he agreed the best thing would be to let Animal Services countinue with the adoption process. Several citizens have offered to take the cow, and Animal Services is going down the list. Once they are finished with the process, we will let you know what greener pastures she will be off to. In the meantime she is still safe with us, and being a bit spoiled by her new friends. She has picked up some weight and can often be seen jumping around and bucking around a bit. We assume she is happy. Today she got some treats and was introduced to her lovely new pink halter. She is still a bit skeptical of people, but she is getting better. LEOnora Penelope, you’re growing on us.

Some more Behind the Scenes action. The Fairriers came today. What in the world is a Fairrier you ask? They are the folks that put horse shoes on our horses feet.... Or as good ol Google says, A farrier is a person whose job involves taking care of horses' hooves and shoeing them if they need protection. ... In fact, the term farrier demonstrates how closely related the profession is to blacksmithing, or making things from metal: farrier comes from the Latin root ferrum, or "iron." The earliest forms of horseshoes can be found as early as 400 BC. And as crazy as it sounds, not much has changed since then. The knowledge and materials have, but the technique is pretty much the same. We would like to thank Rusty and THE Brandons( there are two) from Robbins Fairrier Service, for keeping our big guys feet protected so they can do thier job.

Meet our Mounts! This is Lander, our youngest horse. He is a five year old registered Percheron draft. He is a typical teenager, always getting in to some kind of mischief and trying everyone’s patients. He soooo enjoys pestering the older horses! Thank you ONCE Again Gina Soule for another beautiful portrait of our partners!

Some have asked , what is reiki? According to Wikipedia: Reiki (, /reki/) is a Japanese form of alternative medicine called energy healing. Reiki practitioners use a technique called palm healing or hands-on healing through which a "universal energy" is said to be transferred through the palms of the practitioner to the patient in order to encourage emotional or physical healing.... Our friend Jan Taylor, did some reiki on our fellas at the end of a big day of training. They all enjoyed it and were very relaxed when she was done. Our young guy Lander, reallllllly enjoyed it as you can see lol! Thanks again Jan!

We had so much fun yesterday with the Savannah Mounted Police Department. Day time training was fun,, but night time training was so cool. Don't think Merlin... is quite up for this challenge yet lol I was like a kid, operating the lights in the squad car and was fascinated watching the training . The Instructors are phenomenal. They are so kind and so positive to the horses and Officers. True Horsemen See more

We shared a lot of laughs, sweat and sore muscles, but made some good memories and the riders and the horses all benefited from you time with us. Thank you also Jan Taylor for giving all our horses a quick reki treatment at the end of the day. Lander especially enjoyed it lol! We thank you, and salute you. Forward, YO!

Thank you so much Gina Soule another beautiful portrait of our mounts! This is Sherman, a 16 year old Belgian/Thoroughbred cross. A a mild mannered, solid, all around great police horse... and pick pocket. You have to keep your eye on this one if you have anything edible in your saddle bag and you are partnered up with this sly one. Thanks again Gina for the work you do for us!

There is an old horseman’s saying of No hoof, no horse. We would like to give a huge THANK YOU to Gerald Douberly for coming out today, talking with our Mounted Officers and sharing his vast knowledge of horse shoeing and hoof and leg anatomy. Mr. Gerald is what we would call a local living legend when it comes to shoeing horses. What a treat it was to hear over 50 years of experience! He answered several questions, and even brought out an actual cadaver horse hoof ...and lower leg that he uses for teaching yes, there are teaching types of clinics for shoeing. Thanks Gerald!

Can a Horse Sleep While Standing Up? Yes, horses can sleep while standing up. A mechanism in the joints of the front and hind leg locks when the horse drops one hip as it dozes off into REM sleep. This way, the horse doesn't fall over while it sleeps. As a genetic adaptation, horses sleep standing up to allow them a quick get-away should a predator approach. https://www.thesprucepets.com/katherine-blocksdorf-1885728... Horses do sleep standing up.
