‘TIS THE SEASON For Unwanted Pest Presents Under the Tree As the holiday season is in full swing and stores are lined with customers, everyone’s Christmas deco...rations are going up and the presents are getting wrapped. The cool weather is also here, and windows and doors are being left open. It’s already looking a lot like Christmas around the Southeast (maybe without the snow), but do you have unwanted pest presents under the tree? This time of year, everyone is bringing in fresh cut Christmas trees, taking down the Christmas decorations from the attic, bringing in fire wood to burn for the cooler nights, and kitchens are smelling like fresh baked cookies. So why would that cause a problem? The smell of a fresh cut Christmas tree attracts many people to purchase these firs and bring them inside the home. While having insects in your Christmas tree might sway some people away from the real version, they are nothing to fear. Most insects that infest a Christmas tree are microscopic and often go unnoticed. These insects also usually stay on the tree and are not a threat to your home or its contents. Aphids are one insect that often inhabits these field grown trees. Aphids are tiny, six legged insects that tend to certain parts of the tree. Most of these pests are inactive. Bark Beetles are small insects that bore holes into the trees. They may create small piles of sawdust. Most often, furniture is too dry for the beetles to survive inside of them. Mites are predatory in nature and stick to the trees, eating other insects and eggs. Mites typically infest a tree that has been inhabited by a bird’s nest. So, while an old bird’s nest might look decorative, it should be removed to ensure no mites end up inside the house. Praying mantids are predatory insects and are the exterminators on the tree. They are controlling whatever issue is already in the tree. If eggs have been laid in the tree and hatch while inside the home, they will eventually eat each other if no food is around. Check the branches for a walnut-sized egg mass and remove that branch. Psocids are usually brown or gray and feed on mold, pollen, fungus and other insects. Typically, these insects will die soon after being in the home, as it is too warm. Scale Insects can be tough to find. If you notice tiny, moving red specks, these are typically scale insects. These pests can be easily shaken out of, or knocked away from the tree very easily. Spiders are probably the least favorable pests brought in on the tree. In the home, these spiders will likely die shortly after being brought in, and are there to feed on insects, not you. Here are a few holiday pest prevention reminders; Christmas Tree: Shaking the tree is the best method for removing unwanted presents. You can also vacuum these pests off the tree. Bringing down the Christmas decorations: Most often decorations are stored in cardboard boxes in the attic or in spare guest bedroom closets. These containers provide the perfect harborage and source of food for silverfish. These are wingless insects that are covered by scales. They are shiny, silver and have three appendages called cerci. These pests are most active during the night, and love to harbor in areas of high humidity. Under normal house conditions, silverfish develop slowly and have few young. Females lay eggs year-round in secluded places, such as behind books or on closet shelves; however, occasionally they lay eggs in the open. Silverfish lay only a few eggs at a time but may lay several batches over a period of weeks. The adult female can live for two to five years depending on the species, and can lay up to 100 eggs. After hatching, the young silverfish look like the adults except they are smaller. Their rate of growth depends on temperature and humidity. Sanitation can help prevent infestations but will not eliminate current infestations. Seal or remove hiding places. Sealing up cracks and crevices around plumbing, wall molding, and windowsills will help eliminate harborage (places for them to hide). Removing cardboard boxes and old newspapers eliminates food sources and harborage. Vacuuming can physically remove silverfish. Fire Wood: There are two sets of insects that we deal with regarding firewood. As temperatures drop, we begin bringing in wood for fireplaces. The first type of insect is those that are living inside the wood, often feeding on it. These are primarily termites, carpenter ants, wasps and beetles. Wood that is damp or directly stacked on the ground promote these types of pests. Horntail wasps and wood-boring beetles such as powder post beetles and bark beetles, are some examples. Typically, these insects are already in the wood before it gets cut. The other type of pests is those that use the wood pile as a form of shelter. These pests are typically occasional invaders such as earwigs, centipedes and millipedes. Most of those pests require high moisture levels (uncovered fire wood). Other types of pests sheltering in the wood pile can include cockroaches, Asian lady beetles, scorpions and the black widow spider. Therefore, when handling fire wood you should always wear thick heavy-duty gloves. Firewood pests are a temporary issue and the conditions usually don’t exist to promote long term infestations even with termites and carpenter ants. They are typically brought in small numbers and are usually in the overwintering phase. Overall, store firewood off the ground and away from the structure, and preferably cover with a tarp. Kitchens and Pantry Pests: With the holiday season comes the amazing smell of fresh baked cookies, pies, and cakes. To make those treats, you may be pulling out baking essentials from the pantry that have been in there a while. Most often stored products have a higher rate of pantry pest infestations when the product is way past its use by date. Also with all these great desserts come cookbooks full of recipes. Ever think a pantry pest issue would be found in a cookbook? These books accumulate flour debris while laying on the countertops and can often develop a stored product pest issue such as the red flour beetle. Also make sure to clean up any spilled flour or grain product around their kitchen as well. As with all stored product pest insects they are not always limited to the pantry. What about the Christmas chestnuts that make their way into the living room during the holidays? These could be the perfect breeding ground for Indian Meal Moths. Think outside the pantry to areas where products might have been stored or rodent activity has translocated that product. For a more help with your unwanted holiday pests.. After being trapped in a rat trap for two days, this young possum had a badly injured leg and was extremely dehydrated. Since he couldn’t survive on his own, we thought we would have to dispatch him, but, thanks to Savannah Animal Care, he has been rescued. This possum is still alive today because of their good work.
