Let's be Honest, when parents discover their child(ren) have Special Needs, two words burst into our minds: LIFELONG STRUGGLE In my opinion we go through something similar to the Stages of Grief: Denial, Anger, Bargaining/Guilt, Depression, and Acceptance. Many parents get stuck in the Denial stage. This is when you find children undiagnosed and/or not getting the services they need because "nothing is wrong with them," "they'll grow out of it." These children have developmen...tal delays that are not being addressed and are therefore falling further and further behind cognitively, socially and/or emotionally, thus widening the educational Gap making it more difficult for them to make meaningful gains. Then there are some parents that get stuck in the Bargaining/Guilt stage. This is where you'll find parents allowing their child to do whatever they want because "they have special needs, "they don't know any better," "It's bad enough they have this disability, they've been punished enough." Evidence of this is children with behavior challenges because they are allowed to act however they like. Many parents in this stage simply do not know how to "handle" their child's meltdowns. Some don't want to be embarrassed or fear their child will be mistreated. When a parent gets stuck in these stages, they have now become the biggest obstacle to their child reaching his/her fullest potential. Moving through these stages to Acceptance is critical to a child's success or failure on the road to independence and many times we need help getting there..nothing wrong with that! Know that we, as parents, had to be Special for God to trust us with these precious gifts because He knew no one was better to give His children the love and nurturing they need to be successful in this world. As a parent of a child with Special Needs, my sobering moment was when I realized that I can only take care of him for the rest of My life, what about the rest of HIS? I want my son to have a full life living his dreams independently, not institutionalized or left to the unassured care of someone else. This is why Early Intervention is VITAL for ALL children with Special Needs! Parents if you suspect something is not quite right with your child, trust your gut...Don't wait, get help now and become their Advocate for the best life they can have! See more
