Hi Smyrna! In the recent weeks we have had many requests for car seat installations and inspections by our community members. Although we are still unable to provide this service to citizens at the moment due to COVID restrictions, we DO want to make sure you have the right tools you need to make your self-installation a successful one! Safe Kids Worldwide has created an excellent video to assist you with the entire process. You can view the video at the following link or click below: https://www.youtube.com/watch Again, we thank you for your understanding and can't wait to be back up and assisting our community members in keeping their little ones safe!

WEATHER ALERT! Please prepare for rain and strong winds starting late tonight (10/28/2020) and continuing into Friday morning (10/30/2020) due to Hurricane Zeta. Due to the amount of rain that is forecasted, Cobb County is under a Flash flood watch due to the possibilities of rivers and streams flooding. Smyrna Fire Department will have extra units in service to respond to emergencies. Also, due to it being fall, leaves from trees are falling. These leaves could cause drains... to become clogged. Therefore, more roads may begin to flood. Strong wind gusts are also predicted across north and central Georgia. This may cause an increase in downed trees and power lines. REMINDER! If you reach a road where there is standing water, please do not drive through it! Turn around and find another route to your destination. Rain also makes roadways become wet and slippery. Please watch your speed to prevent hydroplaning and to allow you to arrive safely to your destination. PLAN FOR HAZARDOUS WINDS! Damage may to porches, awnings, carports, sheds, and unsecured lightweight objects may result.

This week, Richard and Kelly visited Station 1 to deliver lunch and thank the crew for their quick action during her life threating emergency. Without any warning, Kelly unexpectedly suffered a stroke- leaving her helpless. Thankfully her husband was nearby and called 911. The quick response time and level of care the Smyrna Fire Paramedics provided, certainly contributed to Kelly’s full recovery. Mayor Norton also came by to meet with Kelly and congratulate the crew on a job well done.

Smyrna Fire Department Urges All to Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen this National Fire Prevention Week Fire Prevention Week 2020 is October 5 9 and this year, as we all work our way through the challenge of COVID-19, the Smyrna Fire Department (SFD) recognizes how much more we are using our kitchens this year amid all of the challenges and changes we face due to the coronavirus. Additionally, with the holidays approaching, being even more mindful of safety in the kitc...hen and other fire prevention actions can help you have a safe and happy holiday season with safer homes. SFD wants this so very much for you! Did you know? Cooking is the #1 cause of home fires and home fire injuries and unattended cooking is the leading cause of fires in the kitchen. SFD encourages you to get the entire family involved in kitchen safety right away. To get you started, SPD offers the following educational videos from Sparky.org and NFPA.org: https://youtu.be/2UBYautmHgk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dm6UMPP2z8I SFD also offers the following safety tips to keep you prevent cooking fires: Never leave cooking food unattended. Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling or broiling. If you have to leave, even for a short time, turn off the stove. If you are simmering, baking, roasting, or boiling food, check it regularly, remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking. You MUST be alert when cooking. Avoid cooking when you are sleepy or are otherwise impaired such as after having taken medication or consumed alcohol. Always keep an oven mitt and pan lid nearby when cooking. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan to smother the flame. Turn off the burner, and leave the pan covered until it is completely cool. Have a kid-free zone of at least three (3) feet around the stove and areas where hot food or drink is prepared or carried. Want more information to engage young household members in learning more about fire safety and fire prevention? Check out the following from the National Fire Protection Agency about the history of fire prevention week: https://youtu.be/VZhvbmqYniA We salute you for your efforts and encourage you to keep up the good work in this most remarkable time! Thank you for your support. It means so much and we want you to know how much you mean to us, too. Be safe! https://youtu.be/2UBYautmHgk

Open Burning is allowed October 1st through March 30th in the City of Smyrna after obtaining a Residential Burn Permit. Permits are free of charge and may be obtained through the city’s website. An open burn with a total fuel area greater that three feet in diameter and two feet in height will require a residential burn permit. Residential burn permits are seasonal and will remain valid through March 30, 2020. Fire Chief Roy Acree reminds residents that Permits are not v...alid for the burning of leaves, clean wood bigger than 6 in diameter, plastic, rubber, rubbish or trash. Once you have obtained a valid permit, you must activate your permit in the automated system by calling 678-631-5455 each time you plan to burn. Grilling or cooking using charcoal, clean wood, propane or natural gas, burning of a recreational fire or burning in a chiminea, portable outdoor fireplace, fire bowl or similar device is allowed all year and does not require a permit. Residents requiring additional assistance are encouraged to contact the Smyrna Fire Marshal’s Office at 678-631-5375 or via email [email protected]. For additional information or to obtain your residential burn permit, please visit our website: https://www.smyrnaga.gov///fire-department/outdoor-burning
