Good morning to all! Class of 2022 took their Infectious Disease Exam this morning, and I’m sure we all did great. Today, we are featuring Sickle Cell Disease (SCD)! According to the CDC, SCD occurs among about 1 out of every 365 Black or African-American births.... About 1 in 13 Black or African-American babies is born with sickle cell trait (SCT) Some of the most common complications of SCD: Pain Episode or Crisis: Sickle cells don’t move easily through small blood vessels and can get stuck and clog blood flow. This causes pain that can start suddenly, be mild to severe, and last for any length of time. Infection: People with SCD, especially infants and children, are more likely to experience harmful infections such as flu, meningitis, and hepatitis. Hand-Foot Syndrome: Swelling in the hands and feet, often along with a fever, is caused by the sickle cells getting stuck in the blood vessels and blocking the blood from flowing freely through the hands and feet. Eye Disease: SCD can affect the blood vessels in the eye and lead to long term damage. Acute Chest Syndrome (ACS): Blockage of the flow of blood to the lungs can cause acute chest syndrome. ACS is similar to pneumonia; symptoms include chest pain, coughing, difficulty breathing, and fever. It can be life threatening and should be treated in a hospital. Stroke: Sickle cells can clog blood flow to the brain and cause a stroke. A stroke can result in lifelong disabilities and learning problems. https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/sicklecell/data.html. #physicianassistant #physicianassistantstudent #physicianassistantschool #physicianassistantlife #physicianassistantstudies #physicianassociate #palife #pasofinstagram #pasofinsta #PAstudent #PrePA #PAschool #PA #PathtoPA #PAintraining #yourPAcan #PAspracticemedicine #womeninmedicine #diversityinmedicine

Congratulations to the Class of 2022 on completing and doing exceptionally well on their first OSLER of Q2! Today, we have.... Student Spotlight Introducing... ... Haley Kohn, PA-S1, Class of 2022 Student Government Association Treasurer Hometown: Simi Valley, CA Education: Graduated with a Double B.S. in Biology and Psych from University of New Mexico, and M.A. in Biomedical Sciences at Midwestern AZ PCE: A lot of random experiences : MA/Scribe for Podiatry and Internal Med, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Technician in Behavioral health, Home Health Care, and Hospital Volunteer! Why PA: The work/life balance and lateral mobility were a selling point for sure, but I've always had a passion for medicine; the body is so crazy and fascinating! I'm interested in Women's Health, Primary Care and Urgent Care, but we'll see where I end up! Diversity & Medicine: I may not fully understand everyone's background or identity, but I know I am always open to being educated by my faculty, peers, and my (future) patients in order to be a better provider. Being in a diverse cohort, led by a diverse faculty, ensures that I receive a more well-rounded education so that when I do begin to practice, I can better understand and treat my patients. Fun Fact: I have a puppy named Hank who provides emotional support & cuddles (especially during zoom lectures) and gives me a reason to go outside! I also love to travel and have been to 20 countries! Advice: It is normal to be scared, overwhelmed, and to doubt yourself BUT there is a point where you will look back and realize how far you have come to reaching your goal. Don't be afraid to ask questions, to look silly, or to fail. They are all opportunities to learn and improve! It's hard to believe, but it's the start of week 4 already! We have midterms galore right around the corner. Not only is it the start of week 4, but today is the first day of Black History Month. In an attempt to recognize and celebrate this month, I will be trying to post more educational posts on common diseases or common variations in disease presentations (like in Derm) prevalent in people with black or brown skin. With this knowledge, we can all strive to be better prov...iders! Keep a look out! #physicianassistant #physicianassistantstudent #physicianassistantschool #physicianassistantlife #physicianassistantstudies #physicianassociate #palife #pasofinstagram #pasofinsta #PAstudent #PrePA #PAschool #PA #PathtoPA #PAintraining #yourPAcan #PAspracticemedicine #blackhistorymonth #diversityinmedicine

This week has been super busy with a test and two "quizzes" (AKA mini-tests). But happy Friday! Student Spotlight Introducing... Caitlyn Risley, PA-S1, Class of 2022... Student Government Association Secretary Hometown: Jacksonville, FL Education: Graduated with a B.S. Biological Sciences from Clemson University PCE: Department of Anesthesia Clinical Research Manager for 2 years, Patient Care Technician on surgical step-down unit for 6 months Why PA: I chose to become a PA because of the patient-centered care that PA's focus on. I loved that PA's are trained to "treat the whole patient" and provide a broad spectrum of patient care. Fun Fact: I have 82 cousins! I am a huge barre-lover! Barre, as in the group fitness activity that uses the ballet barre and its incorporation of movements derived from ballet. I have a personal goal to become a barre instructor, hopefully after school :) Advice: Never be afraid to ask for help!
