The link between depression and the body's inflammatory response continues getting stronger, with more research showing an ever-tighter correlation. Whether inflammation causes depression has been difficult to nail down, but findings from a new study suggest we could be getting closer to an answer. For women in particular, it seems higher levels of inflammation can lead to an underlying condition that fuels depression. https://www.forbes.com//exploring-the-link-between-infla/

Great handout to explain the parts of the brain we work with using Brainspotting!
Great blog that breaks down the neuroscience of the brain in relation to trauma https://www.jennifersweeton.com//heres-your-brain-on-trauma
Studies have shown that PTSD actually does affect the functions of the brains in multiple ways. The three areas of the brain that are impacted the most are the amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex. These area’s all play a part in regulating emotions and responding to fear. After emotional trauma and with PTSD, these areas may perform and function differently than before. https://highlandspringsclinic.org/can-emotional-trauma-cau/
In PTSD, the activation in a basic sense appears to persist, almost like a computer glitch, and the sympathetic system gets stuck in higher gear, crudely similar to a car running at high RPMs for too long. When this happens, these immediate action systems adapt to chronic usage, leading to ongoing burned-out stress, and negative effects on health and quality of life. The parasympathetic nervous system is not able to properly cool things down, and either is offline when neededand we may turn to chemical means to settle ourselves downor it kicks in when we don’t want it to, causing emotional detachment, fatigue, and a variety of symptoms related to imbalances throughout our systems. https://www.psychologytoday.com//new-study-shows-brain-cha

UC BERKELEY (US) When faced with a fearful situation, newborn neurons are able to produce a blank slate to create a strong imprint of the memory. The findings have implications for post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other problems caused by faulty regulation of emotional memory. We remember emotional events much more strongly than daily experiences, and for a long time we have known that connections between the amygdala and hippocampus help to encode this emotional ...information, says Daniela Kaufer, assistant professor of integrative biology at the University of California, Berkeley. Our research shows that amygdala input actually pushes the hippocampus to make new neurons from a unique population of neural stem cells. This provides completely new cells that get activated in response to emotional input. https://www.futurity.org/newbie-neurons-make-fear-hard-to-/
When a patient walks into a therapist’s office, there’s no way to know just how upset he or she is feeling. A serious bout of depression in one patient could look like a bad day for another. Unfortunately, there’s no good objective measurement for emotions, but that could be about to change. Scientists at the University of Colorado at Boulder and the University of Pittsburgh have discovered exactly what our brains look like when we’re feeling a negative or unpleasant emotion. Scientists think this blueprint of activitycalled a brain signaturecan even be used to predict just how bad people are feeling. https://qz.com//this-is-what-your-brain-looks-like-when-y/

Most of what you experience leaves no trace in your memory. Learning new information often requires a lot of effort and repetitionpicture studying for a tough exam or mastering the tasks of a new job. It’s easy to forget what you’ve learned, and recalling details of the past can sometimes be challenging. But some past experiences can keep haunting you for years. Life-threatening eventsthings like getting mugged or escaping from a firecan be impossible to forget, even if you make every possible effort. Recent developments in the Supreme Court nomination hearings and the associated #WhyIDidntReport action on social media have rattled the public and raised questions about the nature, role, and impact of these kinds of traumatic memories. https://www.popsci.com/traumatic-memories-threat-response
Neglect, abuse, violence and trauma endured early in life can ripple directly into a child’s molecular structure and distort their DNA, according to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The genetic changes leave them biologically more vulnerable in later life to psychiatric afflictions like depression, anxiety, mood disorders and high-risk behavior like drug abuse, the researchers found. https://www.kgw.com//childhood-trauma-leaves/507-576550535

We tend to float about our lives, worrying about little inconveniences. But if the space inside your head is generally a peaceful one, count yourself lucky indeed. If instead, you are wrestling in the aftermath of some terrible trauma, it might seem like you're the only one, but you are far from alone. According to the nonprofit PTSD United, Inc., 70 percent of U.S. adults have experienced a significant trauma at least once in their lifetime . That equates to 223.4 million people. 20 percent of those victims develop PTSD. https://bigthink.com//been-traumatized-here-is-how-ptsd-re

Migraine headaches are one of the most common chronic conditions worldwide. Depending on the study, chronic migraines affect around 1 in 10 people, with twice as many sufferers being female. Migraine headaches are disabling and cause significant loss of productivity and quality of life. Once they strike, a migraine can last anywhere between 4 and 72 hours. In addition to substantially reducing quality of life, frequent migraines can place one’s job at risk and prevent daily f...unctioning. Currently, the causes of migraine headaches are not well understood. Genetics are thought to play a role as well as environmental effects and changes in the way the brain interacts with the trigeminal nerve, a pain pathway. https://www.goodtherapy.org//when-stress-is-a-headache-the

My friend Judy’s husband’s story...10 years later. Trauma resilience at its best.
It’s estimated that around 30 percent of people with depression don’t respond to typical antidepressants. This is known as treatment-resistant depression, and brain stimulation therapies can be life-changing for people who experience it. Brain stimulation therapies involve the application of [electric] energy over specific brain regions to modulate the function of neural circuits, Joshua Berman, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of psychiatry at Columbia University Irving Me...dical Center. This can help alleviate symptoms of depression or other mental illnesses that aren’t responding to typical treatments, such as bipolar disorder. The five main types of brain stimulation therapies used to treat mental illness are electroconvulsive therapy, vagus nerve stimulation, deep brain stimulation, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, and magnetic seizure therapy. This article gives an overview of each: https://www.self.com/story/brain-stimulation-therapies See more

While the causality between childhood adversity and adult chronic illness has yet to be fully determined, researchers now have enough knowledge about the way chronic stress impacts physiological health to make some educated guesses about their potential link. When we are threatened, our bodies have what is called a stress response, which prepares our bodies to fight or flee. However, when this response remains highly activated in a child for an extended period of time without... the calming influence of a supportive parent or adult figure, toxic stress occurs and can damage crucial neural connections in the developing brain. According to Harvard’s Center on the Developing Child, the impacts of experiencing repeated incidents of toxic stress as a child persist far into adulthood, and lead to lifelong impairments in both physical and mental health. https://flipboard.com//a-SCXLqNX6SwCoYjX3rJqqFw%3Aa%3A1765 See more
Most events in life are forgettable, but awful moments can remain engraved in the brain for years. Now scientists have a better idea why. In a study that appears in the latest edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, they identify the brain mechanisms responsible for translating unpleasant experiences into long-lasting memories that are critical for survival. This is achieved, they find, by changing the strength by which neurons are connected in the amy...gdalathe part of the brain involved in the formation of emotional memories. https://www.futurity.org/unpleasant-memories-816042/
What is the definition of complex post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)? In short, it is a mental health condition that develops following exposure to chronic, long-lasting traumatic events that generally involve some form of physical or emotional captivity. Improve your understanding of the disorder with this definition and examples of the common experiences that lead to its development. https://www.verywellmind.com/complex-ptsd-2797279
Research has shown that during traumatic events, the amygdala, the brain’s fear center, contributes to the formation of denser-than-normal memories and the perception of time slowing down. This causes the memories to be imprinted in greater detail in our memory, emotions, consciousness, and subconscious. Traditional methods of treatment for PTSD include a variety of psychotherapies, such as Prolonged Exposure and Cognitive Processing Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), and medication. https://www.thebestbrainpossible.com/ptsd-limbic-system-tr/
