Looking for old mills on the Chattahoochee. It's a tough job but somebody has to do it!
Everybody needs a shopping cart to haul your gear around.
We got some new GPS receivers in today. Liz Williamson named them for three Grit Tempered Women of Southeastern Archaeology.
Southern Research is very proud to be part of this team at the University of West Georgia in Carrollton.
This week Southern Research is helping Georgia College and State University explore the back yard at Andalusia Farm in Milledgeville. Andalusia was the home of Georgia's mid twentieth century author Flannery O'Connor but before that it was a mid nineteenth century cotton plantation. Georgia College has plans to restore the grounds and wants to know where, exactly, O'Connor's peafowl pens were located so they called us. We also hope to find remnants of the plantation outbuildings like the outdoor kitchen, smokehouse, and slave quarters.
Southern Research is back in the North Georgia Mountains helping the US Forest Service with the Passport in Time (PIT) program. Volunteers from far and near are helping us learn more about the Native American past in this part of the state.
Earlier this year two of Southern Research's staff archaeologists, Misty Dunn and Liz Williamson, hosted an archaeological excavation for BSA Troop 104 from Greenville, Georgia. The boys and their leaders were excited to excavate a historic house site in Pike County and recovered numerous early 20th century artifacts. Everyone had a great time, learned a lot about archaeology, and the boys are one step closer to achieving their Archaeology Merit Badge. #futureeaglescouts
Southern Research is back in the North Georgia Mountains digging at the Farmers Bottom Site with the U S Forest Service. This year we are being assisted by a Youth Conservation Corps group from the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians from Oklahoma. Today we uncovered the eastern edge of an early Cherokee House that burned and left these stains in the soil. What a great way to teach these young people about their history in their original homeland.
We have a chair thief in the building. #archaeocats
Here's another archaeology lab kitten. Frank Underfoot is three years old today. Thanks Misty Y. Dunn
