May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month! Here are 4 facts you should know about skin cancer: 1. 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70 2. Having 5 or more sunburns doubles your risk for melanoma.... 3. More than 2 people die of skin cancer in the U.S. every hour. 4. When detected early, the 5-year survival rate for melanoma is 99%. Here are some tips to protect you and your loved ones: 1. Make sure to cover up when you're in the sun. This includes wearing a hat to protect your scalp from excessive sun exposure. 2. Wear SPF! Use SPF daily on your face and body and make sure to reapply up to every 2 hours for full protection. 3. Limit sun exposure when the UV index is highest. Most weather apps will tell you the current UV index. For reference: 1-2 is low, 3-5 is moderate, 6-7 is high, 8-10 is very high, and 11 and higher is extreme. So remember, when the UV index is higher, you will burn faster! We hope that you and your loved ones stay happy and healthy this summer!
