Spice shows promise in diabetes; nodding illness puzzles By Kim Painter, USA TODAY Curry and diabetes: Could eating spicy food or getting spice in a pill protect you from diabetes? Maybe. People with prediabetes who took a daily supplement containing curcumin -- a compound found in tumeric, a common spice in Indian curries -- avoided progression to diabetes in a small nine-month study. Progression was seen in some comparison patients who did not take the supplements. But, as one expert tells Reuters, doctors already have good advice for people with rising blood sugar: Improve your overall lifestyle, including diet and exercise, and you may delay or prevent onset of the disease.

Rooibos tea is derived from a plant known as red bush in South Africa. Rooibos plants are delicate and are grown in a natural setting. It is still a very new tea to the world population but is picking up momentum. I am a lover of all types of teas and though black and green teas are very close to my heart, I have recently become addicted to Rooibos tea. It is naturally decaffeinated and has a very sweet and slightly nutty flavor and is low in tannin. I highly recommend you try this tea at least once. Edamame is the young soybeans that are still in its pod. The beans are soft, edible and nutritious. In some Japanese restaurants, edamame is boiled in the pod and served as a snack. It is a very wonderful snack for vegetarians and for those who are looking for a healthy snack alternative. You can find edamame beans in the produce section of any grocery store. Place a tablespoon of garlic infused olive oil in a non-stick pan and when it is heated, add a cup of edemame and sprinkle with a little artisan Himalayan salt. Toss it until slightly brown and eat as a snack.
