October 18th 24th is Invisible Disabilities Week! What is an invisible disability? Invisible disabilities are defined as any physical, mental, or emotional impairment that may not be readily visible. They can include, but aren’t limited to: cognitive impairment and brain injuries, the autism spectrum, chronic illnesses, visual and hearing impairments, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and more. It’s important to note that there are countless invisible disabilities that are common.... The misconception that all disabilities can be seen perpetuates the idea that disabilities look a certain waythey don’t. The spectrum of invisible disabilities is so far-ranging that assuming it is always possible to tell if someone has a disability is ridiculous and harmful. People who have an invisible disability will often fall victim to harsh criticism and judgment from others when using handicap accessible parking spaces or bathroom stalls. The invisible nature of illness and pain may lead others to doubt the reality and daily impact of the condition on the person experiencing it. This disbelief can lead to misunderstandings and rejection by friends, family, and health care providers. It may also lead to accusations of laziness or faking an illness. The best way to combat these harmful assumptions is to spread awareness about invisible disabilities and the negative effect that misconceptions about disabilities can have. Each October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month celebrates America's workers with disabilities and reminds employers of the importance of inclusive hiring practices. The U.S Department of Labor selected "Increasing Access and Opportunity" as the theme for 2020. The purpose of NDEAM is to educate about disability employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of America's workers with disabilities. Workplaces welcoming of all people's talents, including people with disabilities, are a critical part of our efforts to build an inclusive community and strong economy.
