The last (but not least!) of the four 2020 Edge Award Finalists is Jason Sweet @jasonsweetartist Jason creates sculpture, painting, drawing, performance and installation art. His practice centers around his interest in identity, physicalized in works that employ contrasting polarities relating to material, design, and subject matter. In "Boulevard Almost Finished," featured here, he addresses the complexities of the ever-expanding gentrification of Atlanta. Using welded steel..., cement, and enamel, Jason has transformed the elements of urban road construction and repair into a formally sophisticated diptych recalling pot-hole covers and double yellow road lines. Jason received his Master of Fine Arts Degree in Sculpture from the University of Illinois Urbana/Champaign. He has exhibited internationally and is a former Assistant Professor of Art at Atlanta Metropolitan State College. He is heavily involved with the Smoke School of Art, a non-profit think tank and collective in Atlanta addressing contemporary philosophy and issues in modern art and culture @smokeschoolartcollective See more

Next up, Dianna Settles @platonicyouth ! Dianna is a Vietnamese-American artist whose work synthesizes traditional Vietnamese and classical European painting styles. Her work delicately depicts marginalized bodies-usually those of her friends and her self-in moments of communal friendship, joy, and stillness. At once hopeful, poetic, and melancholy, pieces like Infinity Doesn’t Interest Me, featured here, simultaneously celebrate these joyful moments and subtly interrogate ...the societal structures in place that are inhospitable to pleasures like leisure and slowness. Dianna earned her BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2014. Last year she was featured in Of Origins and Belonging at the High Museum of Art @highmuseumofart and completed a 180’ mural in Paris, France, as part of Living Walls’ international exchange program @livingwallsatl . She is currently a resident of the Atlanta Contemporary Studio Artist Program @atlantacontemporary and preparing for an upcoming group exhibition at MINT Gallery @mintatl and a solo show at Institute 193 @institute193 . In addition to her studio practice, Dianna runs Hi-Lo Press, an asset in Atlanta’s DIY ecology @hilopress See more

The next 2020 Edge Award Finalist we’d like to introduce is Michael Jones Michael, originally from Dallas, TX, is an interdisciplinary artist who creates murals, collages, mixed media sculptures, and paintings. In his Pavement Series he breaks urban cityscapes and the objects found within themtraffic cones, skyscrapers, cars and churchesinto bold, abstracted shapes and colors. In energetically arranged mixed media compositions such as Disinfected History, featured her...e, Michael captures the constant change the communities within our city are experiencing. Michael was recently awarded the MARTA Airport Station Mosaic commission @marta_artbound and his murals can be seen all over Atlanta in neighborhoods such as Chamblee, the West End, and Buckhead. AND! We are so excited for Michael’s upcoming solo exhibition here at SCHG in February 2021. Stay tuned! @letter75 See more

This week we’d like to introduce you to our 2020 Edge Award Finalists, beginning with Larkin Ford @larkinford Larkin creates paintings, drawings, sequential art, sculptures and video works that combine memory, secondhand narrative, and invented imagery. Themes such as the bodily grotesque and absurdity enliven his work. In this large-scale oil painting titled The Apostles, multiple narratives meld into a bizarre world that is partially invented and partially pulled from memory and direct observation. Larkin, originally from rural North Carolina, currently teaches at Georgia State University, where he earned his MFA @gsu_artdesign
