October 14th is National Pet Obesity Awareness Day. Obesity is an ever-increasing threat to animal companion health. This is an occasion for thinking about how blessed our planet is with such a rich variety of wildlife. It’s also the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, and a day devoted to activism on behalf of the most vulnerable among us. We recommend taking this time to volunteer for a local animal shelter, rescue, or any organization that has made it its mission to improve the lives of animals.

October 1-7 is National Walk Your Dog Week and in honor of this pawsitively important occasion, we just wanted to remind you that your best furry friend benefits greatly from daily exercise and stimulation. A few tips for happy trails: bring the baggies, don safety gear after dark, pay attention to your dog’s stamina level, and leave the phone at home or at least in your pocket. Walks are a great time for you and your pooch to bond. And, as an added bonus, they’re healthy for you as well!

October is set aside as National Animal Safety and Protection Month to raise awareness of just how crucial it is that anyone who handles or cares for animals does so in a humane and respectful way. Domesticated animals and pets count on us for food, shelter, and love. Wild animals need us to act as good stewards of their habitats. Consider observing this important, month-long holiday by donating to a wildlife organization, such as the National Wildlife Federation, or a local rescue like Sweet Olive Farm Animal Rescue or Three Paws Rescue.

Deaf Dog Awareness Week was created to celebrate the specialness of these pets, and to bring awareness to how prevalent the condition is among dogs. This is a great time to familiarize yourself with signs that your dog may be losing his or her hearing. They include ignoring loud noises, barking more than usual, ear pain or infection or if your dog snaps at you or other pets when surprised.
