On This Day, 95 Years Ago... Seiken Shukumine, A Martial Arts Genius, And The Creator Of Both Taido & Gensei Ryu, Was Born In Okinawa, Japan.... Although We Mourned Shukumine Sensei’s Passing A Few Weeks Ago, His Birthday Always Brings Us Heartwarming Memories And Feelings Of Hope. During this pandemic, I’ve heard many people say one of the silver linings is they have become closer with their neighbors. It couldn’t be truer for us. Often, Sushi Mito will feed us because they know we get hungry and tired, but most of all because we love their food. They’re the best neighbors we could have! This is one of my all time favorite Japanese comfort foods, called Oyako-Don. An omelette with chicken and veggies on rice-with a sweet sauce. Try it sometime! Musashi

75 Years Ago August 9, 1945 The Second Atomic Bomb Is Dropped On Nagasaki, Three Days After The First Was Dropped On Hiroshima. Taido’s Mission has always been one of Peace & Reconciliation. Uchida Kai-Cho arrived in 1970, just 25 Years after WWII ended. But he believed that Americans were open minded and ready for his arrival. He faced racism. Some people called him a Jap (most regretted that immediately). But he would not let those few, with hate in their hearts, define him.... The overwhelming majority of Americans showed him kindness and respect. He fell in love with America, decided to stay, and has been a champion of peace & reconciliation for 45 years. -Being Half-Japanese, it is a very sad anniversary. So many deaths, mostly citizens. And the horrific after-effects of radiation. The Japanese people were experimented on by the American Military. -Being Half-American, it is a sober day of reflection. We do not celebrate this anniversary with parties and fireworks. We remember the bloody battle of Okinawa, and the fear that invading the rest of Japan would result in many millions of deaths, once again, mostly civilian. My family is proof that people can learn from past mistakes, overcome prejudices, and find the beauty in another person’s culture. Today, America & Japan are the closest of allies. It is my deep hope that these two nations, once such bitter enemies, can work together to lead the world forward into an age of global peace, free from the threat of nuclear war.
