Cost of Repairs vs Buying A different Or new boat. With winter in full swing we have seen a few boats come into the shop where they have needed significant repairs and the owners have asked: should I just buy another boat? This is a very difficult question to answer for a business. On the one hand - we like to work and make money... the reality is often that does not make financial sense and folks are left deciding which side of the sword they want to be on. ... We try and encourage boaters to look at all options and decide which is best for them. With new boat prices ranging from $20,000-100,000 - a $2,500 repair bill might be the best option. This assumes the boat you are repairing doesn’t have other issues - soft floor, weak transom or other concerns. Basically you don’t want to fix one issue while neglecting another. In closing - many of the repairs we have made this winter have a direct correlation to lack of maintenance. Proper maintenance is critical to the performance of your boat. Things like: oil changes, spark plugs/wires and regular fuel system cleanings are all normal maintenance to keep your boat running at its peak! Mid season service... what should you be doing? At this point you have enjoyed Memorial Day and the 4th of July! Have you checked the oil level in your boat? Do you have a drive oil tank? Is the level right? It is important that as a boat owner you keep an eye on the vitals. Often problems can be caught before they become nightmares. ... Give your boat a once over! Check the engine oil, drive oil, look for any leaks, make sure the blower and hoses are in good shape.
