Today marks the 82nd anniversary of Kristallnacht, also known as the Night of Broken Glass. This tragic event lasted two days, November 9 and November 10, 1938 as Nazi Stormtroopers and members of the Hitler Youth destroyed hundreds of synagogues, looted thousands of Jewish businesses, and arrested tens of thousands of Jewish men and sent them to the Buchenwald concentration camp. Kristallnacht was the first massive incarceration of Jews in Germany, foreshadowing the Holocaust that was still to come. A Jazz Memoir: Photography by Herb Snitzer features photography documenting America’s jazz scene, focusing on the 19571964, of his over fifty-year career. https://www.thebreman.org//A-Jazz-Memoir-Photography-by-He For most of that time, Herb was the photography editor for Metronome, the primary magazine devoted to Jazz. Images of Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, Count Basie and many others are showcased in the exhibit. Additional works reveal his desire to use photography to effect social change and his belief that Injustice for one is injustice for all. A Jazz Memoir also speaks to the links that connect Jews, Jazz and the African American community.
