Friends This had been a brutal summer for us and our landscape plants and lawns These rains we have had are a tiny bit of relief But know it takes and inch to two inches per week to help plants recover from this drought and extreme heat Heat sensitive plants like hemlocks, pieris, rhododendrons, and dogwoods and even redbuds... Need consistent moist soil and sufficient mulch to keep them moist and roots cooler Any of the plants mentioned above respond well to a few bags of Ice cubes slowly melting near the root zone. This helps cool soil temps down and helps plant respond to heat better. Also be very cautious with water Follow regulations which allow watering only from 4pm till 10 am any day with sprinklers With a hose that has a shut off you can water any time But mid day watering has little effect since it evaporates Also be sure your sprinkler system has a rain shut off gauge Nothing worse than sprinklers going on while it rains. Keep up the good work See more

Gardening is truly the closest place to God. My customer used the watering lecture I gave her to write this Beautiful Meditation ... Daily Devotion WELL WATERED But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers. -Psalm 1:2-3 This fall we replaced a crumbling old front "stoop" with a new "portico" and landscaped our front yard. We replaced very large, over 35-year-old shrubs with a more current looking landscape. Our landscaper actually worked for a nursery who did the original landscaping when our area was developed. But as we met with him about putting out new shrubs and plants in October right before winter he warned us: "When it gets cold, new plants will still survive if they have been freshly watered and then freeze. If they haven't been watered, they won't survive because the wind and cold will dry the top of them out because there is no water in their roots." This got me to thinking. Do I meditate day and night on "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind", and "Love your neighbor as yourself" (see Matthew 22:37-40)? How do I feel when I do meditate on this? I don't know if I am meditating day and night, but I certainly could be meditating more. I think there is a reason that the Bible uses plant analogies so much. Being well watered in good weather means that our roots will be wet and able to survive when we face the cold and wind of bad weather. So, meditate during Lent and water your roots. Anna Orr
