Marriage counseling is great...but then again I’m pretty biased . While I think that most couples could benefit from marriage counseling, it doesn’t mean that it’s appropriate or the best course of action for ALL couples! So how do you know whether to start marriage counseling vs another course of action? Great question, glad you asked! Marriage counseling is a great option if: You and your spouse have been struggling for longer than 3-6 months. ... You recently experienced a betrayal such as infidelity. You’ve lost that connection and one or both have thrown out the D word ....divorce. Your arguments and fighting are becoming more and more frequent. If none of these seem to fit BUT you and your partner are still wanting some guidance, you could consider marriage enrichment workshops! I find that these workshops or retreats are great for couples who: Need a tune up or to get back on track. Recently experienced a transition such as new baby, move, kids launching, etc Wanting to be proactive to prepare for a transition. Lost the spark between each other but still do the day to day stuff pretty well. After reading this if you’re still not sure whether you and your spouse need marriage counseling, then reach out to your local marriage therapist and ask for a consultation! #marriagetherapy

Unfortunately that panic often comes out as complaints, blame, or criticism. They are attempts to gain a response from their partners or gain their a...ttention! Most folks tend to think of pursuers as loud or confrontational or visualize "the nagging wife." Not all pursuers are loud and confrontational though. They can be mild, calm, subtle, very much in control, and many do NOT like confrontation despite their actions. As a pursuer myself, my biggest suggestion for my other fellow pursuers is to work at finding the deeper feelings and voicing those instead of your complaints and criticisms. (ie I don’t feel like a priority to you and it upsets me). When you hear those criticisms swarming in your head, stop and asking yourself what am I really feeling right now? What message am I getting from my partner? If this resonates with you and you want to know more, check out Dr. Sue Johnson’s book, Hold Me Tight.
