We were not planning on getting one, since I still didn’t know what I wanted. They randomly pulled out some cute dresses for me to try on and when I tried the first dress, it was... made for me. No alteration needed, my size and so beautiful. It w...as a very emotional moment when she saw me for the first time. We all said this is the dress... and you know what’s the coolest part of the story? Kyah found her wedding dress as well!!! That same day, we both got our dresses! Happy Loving Day to all y’all but a special air kiss to the interracial couples out there and a sloppy IRL kiss to my beautiful boyfriend. June 12 marks the anniversary of the 1967 US Supreme Court decision Loving vs. Virginia, which struck down state laws that forbid interracial marriage. Mildred & Richard Loving broke the law by marrying in DC in 1958 and were banned from Virginia for 25 years, until along with the @aclu_nationwide they fought the state and won! This was a ...mere 53 years ago y’all and it took uncomfortable work and literal lawlessness just to make it so that more of us could marry who we wanna. Of course, this ruling still left out all the same-sex couples out there until just this decade!! There is still so much work to do to make marriage equality safe and sound for ALL and being in an interracial relationship does NOT exempt anyone from racism, but we’ll take this win and honor it for the important step it was. Representation. Compensation. Appreciation. What do these things really mean? What does it really mean to make sure Black Lives Matter in our lives and businesses? - long after trending support or social challenges. I’m pumped to have these convos, honored to be an ally and unafraid to fight for what’s right. The racism we have recently observed is nothing new and bridal has been way too white for awhile now. Our shop girls and small biz fam have spent the last two weeks mour...ning, learning, listening, protesting, and turning inward- in pursuit of lasting personal changes as well as the creation of a radically accepting space in Southern bridal. We’ve been loud about #blacklivesmatter and we’ve been quick and happy to share black models & brides but we haven’t done enough to support black vendors, industry partners, or designers. We have had official diversity standards in our creative partnership agreements for the last couple of years that some people have frankly been annoyed by but we’ll just be turning it all the way up and then adding ways to hold ourselves accountable for true equal representation on sets, on social, and in store- with our staff and on our racks We’ll do better by our workforce and make sure we show up for our community in more equitable ways. We cannot claim Atlanta clout without leading, and following, wherever this work is needed. And we cannot do good business without using our privilege as a platform for change. It’s not enough. It’s not enough justice and it’s not enough responsibility. Racism is alive and well in America, in the bridal industry, in our safe little circles and in our segregated audiences. If it’s ever been unclear where we stand at The Sentimentalist, it’s firmly with our black sisters and staff, our black brides and the black leadership of this movement. Our shop girls stand in solidarity with Atlanta’s peaceful protests and join them on the streets as we can. Our... store remains a safe space for all and our hearts remain open to humility and direction. Racism must be unlearned and dismantled, systemically and within our own hearts and minds. It has no place in our law enforcement, in our city, or in our store. I’m sorry for every moment we’ve allowed for anything different. Out of love, we are willing to make mistakes if it means we are speaking up. To be true allies, we are here for honest dialogue and compassionate action. To know better and then to do better. We’ll stay quiet over here about bridal for now, but will be sharing the voices of these peers and loved ones in our stories and below. We’re excited to help you babes again and keep our biz going, but stuff’s weird and we must stay safe to stay open! We are definitely adapting in some important ways YOU need to know about :Our vintage & gift shop and accessories lounge remain closed to the public and to walk-ins. We’re keeping appointments and staff schedules a little thin, at safe ...distances and pacing. Staff is monitoring temps and adapting for high risk situations and sicknesses and we ask you to do the same. We NEVER take fees for rescheduling - just reach out if you need to move your appointment for any reason. Groups are limited to the bride + 2 and we encourage less when possible. We are happy to FaceTime or Zoom in friends or family. We have a deep supply of masks, gloves, soap and sanitizer for guests and staff. We wear a mask for you, please wear one for us! (Brides can temporarily remove masks for pics and a good look in the big mirrors) The store is sanitized multiple times a day with each appointment room getting a good scrub down after every visit. Product is off hands to everyone but the current stylist & bride using it - as each piece is steamed or sanitized after every use. Full drink service is on hold and we are cashless for now. Our designers are rockstars Sewing & shipping from home, reorganizing hundreds of orders in a matter of days, keeping us updated on the very regular, trekking through big cities by foot or bike to distribute work to sewers - all while homeschooling their own kiddos or fighting a few sicknesses or some even giving birth! How to Slay a Sample #asentimentalbride @rachel_uhelski found her gown at our Sample Sale last year and we were tickled to finally see her sweet self get married before all this madness started. Let’s talk about finding the one, off-the-rack, like this gal - It was a few sizes too big, wrinkled from sale hands, in need of a new button or two, and with a dusty hem - cause that’s just how these things happen. But the hem is almost always trimmed so that’s no thing, alterati...ons were already to be expected, and some steam and spot cleaning got that gown lookin’ so fresh in a flash. Rachel was flawless and saved enough on the style to snag a fur from @ivyandaster and a pair of fantastic @jenniferbehr earrings SO Y’ALL, a sample can be a magical thing but also requires a little imagination and a lot of listening to your instincts. Yeah, you could shop forever and find every last look - but if you get a tingly feeling when you see a sale item and we know tailoring can get the fit right - go for it! For now, we close. The Covid crisis is no joke and the City of Atlanta is officially sheltering-in-place for at least the next 2 weeks. We’ll miss seeing our sweet brides and staff sisters, but we are happy to be safe with loved ones and a stack of homework. We closed up the last of our in-shop work this afternoon, but we’ll be talking to you allll the time Your stylists are still working from home and will be in the inbox often. Our designers are ROCK STARS and your orders are safely shipped or still in production. We are keeping the closest eye on everything, receiving packages, and making appointments for April and May! Don’t stress, we’re blessed! Our designers are doing a damn good job of making your dream dress happen during an actual crisis. Orders are all on time, give or take a little lag in shipping. Some are shut down but sewing from home, others are walking to & from their nyc studios to avoid public transit (we see you @leannemarshallofficial ) and all of them are keeping us updated almost daily on production and shipping. Having small, and mostly domestic designers puts us in ...a pretty ok spot these days but let’s all remember to practice patience and a little extra kindness right now. Ok y’all, some updates: We’ll be going back to a complete By Appointment Only structure, so the front of our store - the accessory lounge, vintage & sample racks, and gift shop - will be closed to the public for the time being. We’ll continue our extra cleaning procedures and product will be hands-off to everyone but our staff and brides. We’re serious about limiting your crew to you +2 and encouraging anyone & everyone who can or needs to reschedule to shoot us an email asap! We’ll be sticking around to accept packages (your dresses!) and answer phones, but cannot accommodate walk-ins or any browsing. Hey y’all! It’s time to talk COVID-19 We are open for the foreseeable future, but we’re also taking this one day at a time, so partial closures could happen. If they do, we will post it loud and often and be in touch with all scheduled clients. For now- your appointment is safe and solid and we plan to see you soon ;) IF you would prefer to cancel for any reason at all, be in touch asap! We will get you rescheduled, we will get you in, and we will get you your dress - don’t... you worry. But do NOT come in if you are under the weather! If you are recovering from an illness or suspect one, STAY HOME! Our staff is doing the same - no sick stylists will be in the shop, so help keep sick shoppers out! We are also taking extra steps to clean the store and styles daily and are washing hands and surfaces between every client. A few things we ask of you: Please limit your shopping crews to you +2 or 3. We understand this can’t always be avoided, but this is the time to avoid it. We especially know this is a sacred time for some of you to spend with grandparents and young ones, but it’s not the safest for them to be around crowds. Keep this in mind and remember we are HAPPY to help you FaceTime in extra family or friends during your appointment. We will ask that your crew keep handling product to a minimum. Our dresses and accessories are our most shared commodity and the most difficult to clean! I know it’s tempting, but hands off for now. We are happy to retrieve anything for you! And about your special orders!!! - Our styles are almost all made stateside, so we are experiencing minimal delays. Some fabrics can’t currently be rushed and a couple collections are a week behind, but swiftly catching up. We account for these things in the first place so your dress arrivals are all a-okay We’ll keep you updated every step of the way, but no news from us is good news.
