TRS Retiree Friends: Here is a message from TRS. Dear TRS Retiree, You may have noticed a change in your monthly benefit payments for January 2021 and February... 2021 related to the amount of federal taxes that were withheld. In some cases, less federal taxes were withheld than usual, causing an increase in the amount of your TRS benefit. After careful review of the most recent IRS Publication pertaining to tax withholdings, regretfully we determined that we used an inappropriate tax table to calculate your federal tax withholdings. Beginning March 1, 2021, corrections will be made in our system to apply the most appropriate tax table for the remainder of the calendar year. As a result of this error, federal taxes withheld from your January and February payments may have been too low. Below you’ll find a brief summary of what to expect and steps you can take: Beginning with your March 2021 payment, there will be an increase in the amount withheld for federal taxes for the remainder of 2021. The increase in federal tax withholdings beginning in March will not include adjustments for taxes underwithheld in January and February. Your net benefit payment will be less as a result of this change. This change does not affect your 2020 federal tax return, which you are probably preparing now, or have already filed. You are not required to do anything; however, if you would like to adjust your tax withholdings you can log into your TRS account and click Update My Tax Withholdings or return a completed W-4P form, which you can download from our website. Refer to our website for tax assistance resources and a frequently asked questions (FAQ) document regarding this matter. We genuinely apologize for any inconvenience it may cause and want to assure you that protocols have been put in place to prevent this from happening again. We understand how important it is to know what to expect when it comes to your retirement benefits and want to reassure you that TRS takes our responsibility to you seriously. Ensuring that you have a dependable and reliable system that administers your pension is of utmost importance to us. Thank you for your commitment of service to the State of Georgia. Sincerely, Teachers Retirement System of Georgia
