Excited. New book coming soon for criminal defense and dependency attorneys. Look forward to sharing it with you.
Success in Dependency Court, updated to reflect the death of the Child Abuse Registry and yet the perpetuation of a list the can exclude people from working with children and in schools. Paperback version here. Ebook hopefully later this week. https://www.amazon.com/Success-Dependency-Cou//ref=sr_1_5
Child abuse registry died on July 1, 2020. But a registry continues to exist within DFCS that may continue to bar people from employment opportunities. https://wordpress.com/post/tomlinson-lawfirm.com/599
Took a break for fresh air this morning. Found some beauty and fresh air.

This happens all too often. Thank you, Southern Poverty Law Center
Beautiful day for a drive to review bond conditions in person.

Good news! Child Abuse Registry is repealed!
Honored to spend time with Athens Justice Talks and Leslie Spornberger Jones discussing criminal justice laws passed by the Georgia General Assembly.
Based on advice, I’ve set up a more appealing video conference background. Grateful for an office in this beautiful historic building.

An offer of conversation rather than violence in Athens.
Video court moves slowly. Bond hearings and appearances by video are the best answer for now. Waiting my turn in Hartwell this morning.
Working to get folks out of jail.
Gonna try a bond hearing outside.
Georgia's Courts remain closed except for essential court appearances. No jury trials or grand juries until at least June 12, 2020. https://www.gasupreme.us/extend-judicial-emergency/
And some days of COVID quarantine, I can support local businesses like Athens Bagel Company. It’s just downstairs and has hot coffee until 3:00.
Essential work today. Bond motion and a plea today. At least I’m color coordinated...

Wondering why the Chief Justice extended the Judicial Emergency? Why your case can't be heard? Please read. Every case is important and urgent for someone. Lawyers continue to work and advocate but mass court dates are dangerous right now. Please be patient.
Even in these challenging times, getting a client out of jail today.

Client acquitted today. After 2 and a half years of no, I did not assault this person, the jury returned a verdict of not guilty.
Something to think about...
A fictional account of a real and outrageous hearing...
Capped off the week with a visit to a new client in Stephens County.
Grateful to receive another order removing a client from the Child Abuse Registry. Had the privilege to tell client by phone and could hear the joy and elation in client's voice. Fight the registry. There's no reason to accept the label without fighting to be removed.
Yep. Grateful juvenile court has a toy box.
And an afternoon working out a parenting plan and entertaining a child...
Starting my journey in downtown Atlanta. Advocating against the child abuse registry this morning.
I'd like to start a discussion on how to reform the justice system. My first discussion of problems that are seen daily in the criminal justice system.
In 2019, the legislature changed and maybe improved a little the law on the Child Abuse Registry. Still primarily focused on parents dealing with DFCS, the new and up to date version is available in paperback or ebook. https://www.amazon.com/Success-Dependency-Cou//ref=sr_1_1
Success! Another removal from the child abuse registry.
Lovely day for travel. Visited the Oglethorpe County jail today.

Looking back over the decade, this looks and feels consistent with my experience.
Court today in Oconee County, whose tree is under construction, and Madison County. Nice to get some Christmas cheer on a bleak sort of day.
Some days the glamorous job of an attorney requires sitting while another case picks a jury...just in case ... beautiful day to drive to Lexington.

Final hearing in a private dependency for an adorable little boy. Happy day!
Delivering a bond order to the jail.
This is not a survey or a twitter poll. It’s a day to have your say. Voting is your opportunity to impact a real life outcome in your community. Go vote!

Thanks GACDL for offering education in a beautiful place.
An errand today on the way to Continuing education in South Georgia. Brought my briefcase so I would look official. View from the waiting area.
For attorneys the story for a client tends to end with the closing of a case. Yesterday I had the honor to ask the court to discharge a client from a First Offender sentence and return this client to having a clear record. Great to see people succeeding and using the second chance to their best advantage!
Honored to have participated in yesterday’s Probate CLE. I am grateful for the generous feedback today your contribution was SUPERB.... I am so grateful to have met you. I always say that I love a true "lawyer's lawyer." By that I mean a lawyer who practices professionally, ethically, competently, aggressively, and compassionately. It is always easy to spot a lawyer who loves people and loves the law.
I had the pleasure of participating in panel discussion on advocating for wards/proposed wards and serving as Guardian ad Litem in Probate Court.
Civil Competency Trial. Everything is backwards.
Appeared in Jefferson County Juvenile Court today. Historic spot and beautiful courthouse.
Greeted by a beautiful sunset on my way out of the office. Benefits of preparing on Sunday afternoon. Have a great week!

Guess what? The disclosure wasn't in the waiver. Making your DNA public in a limited scope and available to a business places your privacy at serious risk!
Everyone has a story to tell.
