October Birthstones Birthstone #1: Pink Tourmaline Pink Tourmaline is one of the birthstones for October. Tourmalines are a semi-precious gem stone from black in color to bluish black or from palest pink to hottest pink. They even come bi-colored and multi colored. One of the most common is the watermelon tourmaline; personally, one of my favorites!... Most guys don’t really care for the color pink nor the other birthstone, Opal. Since guys are starting to wear more jewelry, we’ll create a little anarchy here and say, how about a different color tourmaline? According to one Egyptian legend, the tourmaline passed over a rainbow as it made its way up from the center of the earth and took on all the colors for itself. Tourmaline was also worn to cure depression, attract friends and lovers, and inspire creativity. Birthstone #2: Opal Opals are pretty well known to most people. Maybe what they didn’t know was that like the other birthstone for October, Opals also come in a wide variety of colors. From almost a translucent white to fiery black. The more fire an opal has increases it’s worth. Another of my personal favorites is the Boulder Opal. This type of opal is used in a wide variety of pendants. If hung on a leather necklace, it makes for a very gender-neutral piece; great for a guy or girl. Care for your opal. We’ve all heard this before, you have to soak your opal in water or rub baby oil on it to keep it hydrated or maybe you haven’t? The fact is, opals are a soft stone and yes, they can dry out. So, if you need to store your opal for a long period, it is a good idea to keep it in a sealed plastic bag with a damp piece of cotton to prevent dehydration. If your stone is pretty old and worn, in order to bring any fire back to it, you may need to oil it with mineral or baby oil. It’s not a cure, but it does help. Here are some beliefs about the opal. The opal is an emotional stone and reflects the mood of the wearer. It also intensifies emotions, releases inhibitions, and encourages both freedom and independence. Opal is believed to enhance cosmic consciousness and induces psychic and mystical visions. It stimulates originality and creativity; great for any kind of artist. Overall, October birthstones, Opal and Tourmaline, are colorful and inspire creativity. Let your special October someone know you are thinking of them and buy them jewelry with these remarkable stones. We can show you what we have in the store or customize a piece for you. Come on in and let’s talk about these marvelous gifts.
