What a great time for Steam activities with The STEAM club and our members Jaime Ralston and Doug Ralston! What is STEAM? It is an after school program that combines Art and STEM curriculum to make learning fun! Our youth had a great time building rockets today! Art Ala Carte

Members of the WBCCI Unit 32 Top of Georgia Airstream Club, I will be posting the minutes from the few meetings that were held since I became Secretary last fall. These minutes have been stored in an online Google docs location but we are fine-tuning a method to allow access to our membership but it has been a challenge. We have to add each member individually which takes time and maintenance. Therefore, I will be adding the minutes to our private Facebook Group and event...ually to our website via our webmaster Kevin Prom. Our new 1st VP Doug Ralston has recently met with Kevin and they are working on a plan to get the website updated. Stay tuned for more updates on that! To have access to see the minutes when posted on our private group, please make sure you are a member of the Top of Georgia Airstream Club and Park Community Page. If you click on the little magnifying glass icon at the top of the screen in Facebook and type the name it will show up. Be sure to answer the questions before hitting submit so I can verify your membership in the club. If you have any trouble please comment below and I will send you an invitation to join. For those that are not on Facebook I guess you won’t see this but I will email out a link that will allow you to see the minutes that way. I appreciate everyone’s patience with me as I am work to get these minutes out for everyone to view. I am currently training for the police academy and working nights so I am keeping a crazy schedule. As always, please email me at [email protected] if you have any questions or concerns. Very respectfully, Kimberly Funderburg TOG Secretary

Dear Top of Georgia Airstream Members and Guests, Hopefully this note finds all of you well and ready for the holiday season. We certainly are enjoying the leaves here at the Top! Our winter hosts want to send out a notification making all members and guests aware of the wonderful situation the park finds itself in. We are going into the winter season with many of our current campers planning to stay through the season. ... As you know, our spots are first-come-first-serve, so it is highly recommended you call the host to inquire about available spots before making your trip to the park for your getaway. We would hate to have you arrive and not have a cold weather capable site for you. We look forward to another wonderful season at the Top! Stay well and warm!

The past several weeks have been very busy for us! We have been on the road one way or the other since September spreading the goodness of Black Bears in Appal...achia Georgia! We will hit the mountaintops and get into the details in later posts . . . spread the goodness and not have one monster post. We partnered with #findoutdoors and had three table events at Brasstown Bald and three at Anna Ruby Falls in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Park. We got to speak to 618 folks from Georgia, Florida, L.A. (that's Lower Alabama to you Californians), South Carolina, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Russia, Finland, and everyone moving from New England and Chicago to the sunny south! We look forward to our partnership with FINDOutdoors and plan on future dates next spring if not sooner! Through this event, we met the great folks at the Top of Georgia Airstream Club and Park. We partnered with them and got them a couple of signs and brochures to make them more BearWise! We have been driving through Appalachia Georgia pushing our new educational brochure out into various locations. We will get you an updated list in a future post. Recall our mission statement says our mission, "is to reduce Human-Bear conflict through proactive educational outreach programs, increasing public awareness about coexisting with black bears, the use of humane bear deterrents, and advocacy." Key words "proactive" education and advocacy! We cannot do this without getting out and looking people in the face and engaging them in conversation! October 03, 2020, Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Blairsville, Georgia had the annual "Blessing of the Animals" and, although I could not take a real Black Bear, I took a representation. We could use all the help we can get. Saint Francis of Assisi is my family Patron Saint so we ask for his prayers as we ask for yours. Road-Kill. With Hyperphagia in full swing and the "fall shuffle" for food resources, we have seen an uptick on Black Bear Road-Kill. We will discuss it more at length in a later post. Helen, Georgia had two last Friday and one near the entrance of Brasstown Bald, also last Friday. Poor Yearlings are the low Bears in the peaking order and are still looking for a range. We had people showing up to our table and reporting seeing them. Unfortunately, they were taken by person's unknown. Hopefully, they were properly reported in accordance with Georgia Statute, but chances are they were not! We will talk about that more in a future post. We did a report and submitted it to Georgia DNR. We thank the Towns County Sheriff's Department for doing a follow-up with the Brasstown Bald site manager on their report. We followed up with them and provided our information. We love to see children's eyes light up as they learn and care about something beyond themselves! Our neighbor's eight year old son has been saving his money up to donate to us to help the Bears! He brought me his jar with $4.69 a couple of weeks ago and we put his donation to good use and put it toward a stand we are having constructed that will have a bird, deer, and hummingbird feeder mounted to it to illustrate what Human's should not do. We haven't neglected our "research area." We have some interesting observations to share soon from that area. We did two significant advocacy submissions this past month. One was for the Whitepath Electric Reliability Project in Gilmer County. The second was for our position and support of the USDA, Petition for Determination of Non-regulated Status: State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry; Blight-Resistant Darling 58 American Chestnut (APHIS-2020-0030). That is not all, but it is enough for now! Remember, I said it would be at the Mountaintop level! Enjoy! #humanbearconflict

Top of Georgia Airstream Club and Park 12.08.2020

The 6-Gap Century Bike Ride is coming up this Sunday, Sept. 27! A lot of people have asked how they can volunteer but all the volunteer spots are already taken. However, there are still chances to celebrate the riders, volunteers, and have some fun while promoting the park! The weather is looking grim for Sunday, so if anyone wants to keep a fire going in the upper pavilion, I'm sure some soggy volunteers or riders would appreciate a break. If you have a coffee pot or hot wat...er kettle and wanted to have some warm beverages for the volunteers I'm sure they would appreciate that. And if you just want something to do that will have a big impact, take your camp chairs, umbrellas or ponchos out to the road and cheer riders on as they go past. If we have any Top of GA flags let's take them. In Europe, cycling fans will hang out by a road all day with picnics, wine and cowbells for the 5 minutes that the peloton passes. We should have riders coming through from about 10 or 11am until 3pm and this is the halfway point - they still have three huge climbs to go. Make them feel like they are professional riders--it's a lot harder to suffer for fun! Here's a clip from the Tour in 2016 where you can see all the crowds in the rain: https://www.nbcsports.com//climbing-through-rain-stage-20-. If you have any specific questions about any of the suggestions above, email Daniel Jessee at [email protected] so he can help you get ready. Some things might need a few extra precautions to consider COVID safety. See more
