Augusta has seen 4 peaceful demonstrations protesting police brutality and the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Last night, protesters on Broad Street laid for 9 minutes to recognize the nearly 9 minutes that Floyd was pinned by a police officer before he died. They were joined by RCSO officers. Augusta history is being recognized, AND made, this week by a committed group of community members in this virtual timeline tour. The 1970 Riot is an often untaught part of our story, but its impact is felt deeply even today. Follow the 1970 Augusta Riot page to learn about the events, in sync with the actual timeline of what occurred in Augusta 50 years ago this week. The committee also seeks to connect with any surviving family members of the #Augustasix, as well as photos. Will you run to honor Ahmaud Arbery today? Evett Davis, wife of Augusta Mayor Hardie Davis, Jr. and other members of the community have organized a gathering at Diamond Lakes Park tonight at 6pm to honor the memory of this young man whose life was ended too soon. He was fatally shot February 23 in Brunswick, GA while on a jog in his neighborhood. Two men were arrested and charged with his murder on May 7, after two months of inaction by law enforcement. ... We know that to #RunWithMaud is just a first step. We also know we have to stand with our friends and neighbors to demand justice.
