Worked til dark last night. Naughty dogs, but spectacular sunset.
Roy...our newest English Cocker. Imported from UK. Sire and dam both FCs.
Complex training setup: Remote sit in a boat stationed at an angle toward open water Cast out of the boat from the bottom rather than from the platform. The cast is a right back to get the exit close to shore but still stay in. ... Keep tight to the first lazy point. A diversion mark/poison bird is thrown in route at the closest proximity to the land. I had the dogs either cast up on the land or they took the route toward the diversion...either way they ended up on land looking at the diversion/PB. One cast off the diversion back in the water was the standard (I actually tried to get Ivy to take a right back cast which would have had her hit the land but keep going. She took that cast well up on land toward the PB rather than the intended direction. But, she readily took my left cast back in the water so no big deal. After her I had all the dogs get up, stop, and cast in order to avoid a missed cast situation and drive the lesson a little clearer). Get on and off the point near the end. I expect the dogs to take a nice 45 degree angle off the point from a very fat position so they come back in view rather than fall behind the point out of sight. Finish the blind putting the dogs out on the bird Pick up the diversion as a delayed mark after the return.
This is the third day running the 5 leg tune-up drill. That’s a very tough blind that he has learned to negotiate correctly with only influence from me at the line.
5 leg tune up satellite view (older satellite image). #5 is 350 yards.
Leg 2 of the tune up drills we are running. This video represents what I accept as progression toward the absolute standard. He has run this leg 5 times now. He has lined through the goal post on a couple of previous runs but wound up cheating the narrow cove on the third water obstacle in route. He received a correction for cheating (he cheated both ways). I accepted the wider line up front because he took one cast to go through the slot (goal post) with the focus more on ...whether or not the correction he received for cheating provided the data he needed to self-correct. It absolutely did in this case both on the out going line and the return. Notice how I rewarded his effort to seek the water by giving him a GOOD verbal encouragement. The reward of telling him he did what was expected is just as powerful as the correction when he violated the standard we have well entrenched of not cheating water when it’s on line. Ultimately this complicated blind will be a routine run for him and he will line it. For now as long as he makes the necessary efforts I’m good. Advanced training is often a measure of what you will take in the midst of imperfection as long as effort is demonstrated. Because we ask so much of these dogs an expectation of perfection on every run is not realistic. There has to be room for error and recovery as long, again, as effort is there. Enjoy. It’s a pretty good run.
Ace doing a re-entry water mark with gun fire and cover along the edge.
Monday double. Ran as a true double. The marks were launcher marks thrown quite a long distance from the launch location. G-2 was behind the dogs out of sight when they were getting close to the mark area with G-1 clearly in view. Tough check down go-bird. G-1 is 175yds. Both gunner locations are well elevated above the pond on a ridge throwing down into the pond area.

The canines we train in the world of working dogs are amazing. Whether it’s a retriever performing a complicated set of marks and blinds at a field trial, or detection dogs identifying threats from drugs or explosives, or apprehension dogs capturing bad guys, or herding dogs working flocks to keep them safe...they are all amazing. Enjoy this clip. https://fb.watch/2CZJ2oyQYX/
Christmas Eve...running land blinds in the rain. Wouldn’t every dog trainer be about that
Kate and Ace are steady at 3 months old.
Kate running a double.
I decided to hang on to my wingers. I rebuilt them yesterday morning after puppy training time then headed out to put them back to work. Ran a challenging triple for the crew yesterday. Those two birds (1&2) along the water’s edge were quite the challenge. One trait often counters another. To get dogs driving hard up and out of the water after going through water yard work (channels, shoreline de-cheating, de-cheating entries, swim-by) is one task in the program. Then, try...ing to strike a balance with the younger crew between driving up and out yet being comfortable to hunt the edge is another task...one that requires some experience and maturity (and thinking on the retriever’s part). These lessons are essential to build balanced dogs. It may look ugly in the process (great marking dogs on up and out marks sometimes look completely unhinged on these tight to the shore marks), but be patient.
We have to be selective about working water in colder weather with the pups...attitude is always in focus. Kate has no issues with attitude. This is also the first introduction to gunfire in conjunction with marking. They have heard gunfire numerous times...now its for them. BTW, that’s her brother with the big mouth in the background Ace!
Scott...an awesome setter. I had Scott when my buddy and mentor in the industrial world Carvella King was still with us. Carvella passed too soon 17 years ago. I still expect to see him driving in the lot ready to go on a big job...we did a bunch of them. I miss Scott and I miss Carvella...good memories, bitter sweet.
Lucy... This was probably 15 years ago
Intensity defined...
Never go through life (or water) without stopping to check out the little things along the way...so many miss these opportunities, I make it a point to seek them out. I think Rollo is a kindred soul.
Never been one that loves retrieving more. He literally drools for marks every time he runs. 10 years old and strong as a deisel!
Looking for a good looking black male puppy. The pup will be trained as a hunting/family dog. Only interested in great looking potential pups. I don’t train ugly dogs Let me know what is available. Health certifications obviously a must.
Congrats to Dave Hinchman and Sean Hager for taking Chance to higher levels. Sean has done a great job advancing Chance to the MH level and after this weekend a new QA2 title!! Chance placed second yesterday and again today in the qualifying stakes held in Florida at Frank and Rita Jones’ grounds. Chance is a beautiful dog. He was a nice pup. I am happy to have sold Chance to Dave who has invested the money and time to allow Chance to thrive. ... Great job guys!!
After January 1 I will open up 4 spots for training candidates. I am opening space for retriever owners who want an HRCH, MH, All Age or top tier hunting dog (I will work with you to have you handle your own dog...I am not planning to campaign hunt tests). I’m not interested in short term work. I’ll take a pup to the highest level or advance a started dog to a higher level. If you are a serious retriever owner who wants to engage this opportunity send me a message. Again, I am only opening up 4 training spots whose fillers will continue training with my own crew. I will also work one on one with you to advance your handling knowledge and skill set.

Teaching Ace whistle sit and word association with fetch.
Happy Birthday to the resident party girl... Tremblin Earth’s Too Hot To Handle TRAMP
That’s a straight up grown man...! He’s going to be running his first event in quite some time next month.
That’s a hunting machine... She’s just the coolest dog!
1/2-English setter 1/2-Jack Russell terrier =... 1-Bridget!
Brother and Sister...Ace and Kate!
A real double with real quail. She likes to play at the water's edge she was looking at on the last mark...but she returned as directed. Great progress. BTW...I only did a hey-hey to remind her about the bird. Ultra strong for a 9 week old baby.
If you recall Bailey teaching Kate to jump the bales with her previously...well, here’s why. Step by step. That’s pretty stout for 9 weeks!
Due to the arrangements I have orchestrated regarding Bailey starting puppies I am announcing that I am resuming my status as a professional. I don’t necessarily agree with the extent of the rules as written (to include anyone in the same household)...but, the rules are the result of the consensus of the trial community. I suppose I could be unethical with regards to the rules as written and not divulge my dealings, but that isn’t who I am. Also, it wouldn’t set the proper ex...ample for my family. So, while I am not deriving any income from training dogs at this point I did orchestrate the setup for my daughter. She is now training a puppy and did receive a gift from the owner’s representative. According to the rules that constitutes being a professional (she’s 14 ). I honestly think the rules should be looked at with regards to truly what constitutes a professional. I also think the rules should be changed to allow professionals to judge. That’s just my .02 on that subject. I regret that I will not be available to help out clubs with regards to judging. I honestly believe our sport needs a new pool of knowledgeable and competent judges to help out. I think my contributions thus far have been positive. I do realize there are some newer folks stepping up and that’s great. With regards to me accepting dogs for training I may consider that prospect if the right scenarios present themselves.
My passion for retrievers revolves around training and breeding retrievers with a few core desired traits...two of which are looks and ability. Ace knocks both of those traits out of the park!
320 yard blind we ran today. Start with the initial line tight to the left side of the tree and stump. Skim past or barely skinny in the first water. Hit the second point good and fat. Skim by the third point. Navigate a large span of water between the third point and the island keeping the dogs on line to the blind. Cast off line on to the island well up and dry. Get angle cast off of the island expecting the dogs to come into view at a 45 or so off the island. Finish the bl...ind. Really a routine concept blind that should be done with ease if your dog is 1)- comfortable around water (you’ll never get that initial line with a dog hammered to get in), and 2)- willing to get on and off land without drama at your command (should really be a one cast on/one cast off scenario). Nice pond, great concept blind, gorgeous weather.
Welcome Ace to the crew! Beautiful boy!
Marks this afternoon. Pretty stout (#2 is 280). Brutus killed it. Got dark before Rollo could run. Will try him Saturday, Lord willing.
Kate with a 6 cover change angled land mark.
SOLD This little guy (beautiful pup...well socialized, very mannerful and suitable for living in a home) is available. Probably not for long. He’s a brother to Kate that Bailey is training. PM me if you are interested.
They have met...
Monster dawg...little beast!
The new team.... Bailey and Kate
