Marcus DiBattista is reaching new heights while working as a co-op this summer with McKenney’s Inc. he’s even helped plan a helicopter lift at a work site! A mechanical engineering student, Marcus’ tasks include developing job takeoff estimations from drawings, applying for permits, scheduling work, creating drawings of new work, finding and ordering new units or parts as well as organizing the delivery to the jobsite, and creating and scheduling service contracts. By givi...ng me all of these responsibilities, McKenney’s has showed me that they are actually committed to educating and trusting young people with important tasks to effectively teach as well as to make students feel like they are an integral part of the McKenney’s family. I highly recommend McKenney’s to all mechanical engineering majors, no matter your interests. Founded in 1948, McKenney’s Inc. is a leading mechanical contractor in the southeast. The firm specializes in facility construction, operation and maintenance. McKenney’s customers include the Georgia Aquarium, State Farm Arena, Mercedes Benz Stadium, and many of the high-rises across the Atlanta skyline.

Congratulations to Anthony Agcaoili, John Frericks, Wesley Henderson, Billy Xiong, and Eryck Warmsley on winning the award for Best Manufactured System or Process Design at our 2021 Capstone Showcase. The team designed and built a manually-operated assembly line for the assembly and disassembly of a household power tool. The assembly line teaches lean manufacturing concepts with the aid of digital technologies such as a key performance indicator (KPI) and table tracking. The ...assembly line will give engineering students hands-on experience in lean manufacturing concepts. In addition, the line will help students learn about various model digitalization technologies that will be a part of the assembly line’s process such as robots, AI assistance, virtual reality/augmented reality assistance, and more. The team's faculty mentor was Dr. Jaime Camelio, Associate Dean for Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

From beavers, which stop up flowing water to create the pools of water they depend upon, to oysters, which filter seawater and stabilize the shoreline to create more habitat, organisms are constantly engineering their environments for maximum success. Researchers in the University of Georgia’s Institute for Resilient Infrastructure Systems (IRIS), a multi-disciplinary research center housed in the College of Engineering, are particularly interested in this phenomenon. Understanding how ecosystems such as salt marshes and oyster reefs self-adjust to sea level rise and climate change, helps to harness their unique ability to provide storm protection, water quality improvement and erosion control, among other benefits, as an integral part of our coastal infrastructure systems. A trio of UGA engineering students have found a way to maintain the Fort Pulaski National Monument site as a viable destination for park visitors for the foreseeable future. Sea level rise, severe storms and more frequent flooding have made it difficult for the wastewater in the park’s septic drain fields to filter out through the soil. Without a way to safely remove the waste, the park near Savannah would not be able to continue welcoming the more than 350,000 guests who vi...sit the National Park Service’s Civil War battle site each year. Currently, there are only six functioning toilets and two functioning urinals on the property. Emily Mitchell, Sarah Pierce and Sawyer Soucie spent the past year working with UGA Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant on a senior capstone project to develop a sustainable solution that would be resilient to changing water levels and not harm the protected marshlands that make up the majority of the park. The team studied the infrastructure on Cockspur Island, where the park and a U.S. Coast Guard station are located, looking at sea level rise projections, soil composition and wastewater volume. They ultimately proposed three different ideas: building an improved, mounded septic system; developing a mini wastewater treatment plant on Cockspur Island; and installing a network of pipes to transport the wastewater to the municipal wastewater treatment facility on neighboring Tybee Island. The University of Georgia has the largest fleet of electric buses of any university in the nation. To keep those buses rolling, a team of UGA College of Engineering students designed a system that utilizes wireless power transfer for on-route charging. The team of Logan Davisson, Justin Fischman, Richard Garcia, Jackson Meyers, Mark Perry, and Ethan Schwartz won first place in the Sustainable Design category of our 2021 Capstone Design Showcase. Their goal was to design a saf...e wireless power transfer system that mounts flush with the pavement, that can be retrofitted to the buses with minimal modification, and that delivers charge rates as close to factory hard-wired specifications as possible. In addition to designing the system, the team provided a cost estimate and analyzed existing route data to identify where the platform could be implemented. "My favorite part of the job has been working on projects that I can then go out and see in the field." Deemah Alamoudi, a mechanical engineering student, is completing her third co-op rotation with Georgia Power. "I spent my last two rotations with Line Design in Atlanta helping design the transmission lines that span across the state. This rotation, I’ve been placed at the Transmission Maintenance Center in Athens, where I’m assisting with the maintenance of all lines and ...right-of-ways in the northeast region of Georgia." The UGA College of Engineering and our industry partners offer students exciting opportunities for co-ops, internships, study aboard and research. These experiential learning options are where students connect what they learn in the classroom to real-world, hands-on experience. We'll feature our students' summer experiences throughout the next few months. To learn more about experiential learning in the UGA College of Engineering visit engineering.uga.edu.

Time to harvest the peanuts? There may be an app for that! Georgia’s peanut crop generates more than $600 million annually, but determining the optimal harvest time for the crop can be tricky. Current crop assessment tools are time consuming and prone to human error, leading to millions of dollars in lost yield each year. Researchers in the University of Georgia College of Engineering are working to help farmers improve the quality and quantity of their yield by providing th...em with faster and more accurate data. In a new study published in Springer Precision Agriculture, the UGA team presents a portable, smartphone-based system for peanut harvest analysis. Read more: http://bit.ly/uga-peanut-app

We connect next-generation research with real-world solutions. When a patient comes into a hospital, the last concern he or she should have is developing additional ailments that can complicate treatment or recovery. Our goal is to eliminate the risk of infection and device clotting, improving patient outcome. Megan Douglass, a Ph.D. candidate in the UGA College of Engineering, is designing and evaluating antimicrobial and blood-compatible surfaces to reduce the rate of inf...ection and clotting related to medical device use. Her work to make hospital stays safer recently earned a 2020 Baxter Young Investigator Award, one of only 16 presented by health care product company Baxter International. One of the most promising breakthroughs in Douglass’ research involves the combination of copper nanoparticles with nitric oxide-releasing technology, creating a multifunctional antibacterial and antithrombotic platform for medical device coatings. "I wanted to play a role in protecting our beautiful planet (and) engineering is the ultimate bridge between hard sciences, math, society, and application." Lacey Tucker transferred to the University of Georgia from a smaller college in rural Georgia where she was studying marketing. She calls the transition "humbling," but says she's been able to thrive because of UGA's peer tutoring service, the willingness of her professors to provide extra guidance, and the supportive community in the College of Engineering. Did you know nearly 20% of undergraduates transferred to the UGA College of Engineering after beginning their college journey elsewhere? I want to help future students who are really interested in engineering and may not have the financial means to do it. Jack Bush, a mechanical engineering major from Savannah, will be the student Commencement speaker at Friday's ceremony. Jack, who put himself through school by working more than 20 hours per week while carrying a full course load, established the Bush Engineering Scholarship for minorities interested in engineering. At the Commencement ceremony, Jack will s...peak on hard work, growth and excelling inside and outside the classroom. Read more: http://bit.ly/jack-bush
