Here's a list of potential questions to consider to kick-start your discussion with law school recruiters: How does your law school review applications? When do you typically let candidates know about admissions decisions? What do you look for in a personal statement?... Is there an advantage in applying early? If applicable, what type of support/services are available for nontraditional students? What type of support/services are available for veterans? Do most students study on campus or off campus? What does a typical week look like for 1Ls? Are there opportunities to be a part of law review or law journal and when can you access this? Are their study abroad opportunities? What percentage of entering students have taken time off after college graduation? Do you have any formal mentoring or networking programs? What services are offered at your school’s career services office? Do you offer merit or need-based scholarship or grants? If so, what criteria do you use? Do you have a loan repayment programs for graduates who go into public interest law? (For state supported schools) Are students able to obtain state residency status while in law school? Here are some tips to help you prepare for the Law Fair: 1. Take a look at the law schools that will be in attendance and make a list of the tables you want to visit. Have a strategy, but also be open to talk to reps from schools that are not on your list. 2. Before the event make a list of the questions you want to ask each school. Do your homework. Avoid asking questions that can be easily found with a quick Google search or on the ABA required disclosures, such ...as median LSAT score, tuition, and bar passage rates. Also, do not ask a rep to simply tell you about their school (this is too general, ask a more specific question like, Does your law school have any study abroad opportunities?). 3. Dress to impress. You don’t have to wear a suit, but your appearance should be professional. Business casual is appropriate. 4. Bring your UGA ID, something to take notes, and a few business cards (you won’t give them out to every rep, but they can be helpful to have on hand if a rep offers to follow-up on a question by email). Leave resumes at home unless you’ve been asked in advance to bring one by a particular rep. 5. Create a positive first impression. Introduce yourself with confidence. Be prepared to give a 10-15-second (NOT 10-15 minute) elevator speech about your background/interests. If you are currently applying, let them know. 6. Be courteous. Do not monopolize a rep’s time. Do not just ask for fee waivers or freebies and walk way. Avoid conversations about law school rankings. 7. If you have a meaningful interaction with a rep and receive their business card, do not be afraid to follow-up with a thank you email. See more
