The fourth feature in our University Special Collections Libraries Faculty Teaching Fellows program series is Moon Jung Jang from the UGA Department of Visual C...ommunication Design in the Lamar Dodd School of Art. In the interview below, Professor Jang shares about how utilizing Special Collections archival materials impacted her and her students. Q&A with Professor Jang 1. What has been your favorite special collections item or group of items to use in teaching? My students and I have read some issues of The Student Voice published by SNCC, Student Non-Violence Coordinating Committee. 2. Why were these issues your favorite items? A design course, Design Center, is designed to explore graphic design problems and the impact of visual communication design. Project topics range from social design & public outreach to information graphics. The Student Voice is an invaluable material to reflect the collection of historical messages onto the present public through design practices. 3. How do students respond to, or what do they take from the experience of working closely with special collections materials? After reading some issues of The Student Voice, students in this class have used the material as an inspiration to create a series of visual forms or to commemorate information and legacy derived from The Student Voice. Also, they have designed various forms: campaigns, publications, online platforms, and experiential designs. The University Special Collections Libraries Faculty Teaching Fellows work with archivists and librarians to redesign existing courses or create new ones that focus on archives-centered learning. The deadline to apply for the program's next cohort is coming in January. To learn more about applying, visit https://ctl.uga.edu//special-collections-libraries-fellows/ Richard B. "I have worked as the ex...hibition coordinator with BMA since 2018. I focus on using the collections to tell stories in our physical gallery spaces for visitors of all ages. As someone who really likes modern American history, BMA’s collections offer a real playground of materials to explore and use in storytelling." See more

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame, Hargrett Library is giving away free copies of "Like: Poems" by 2019 Inductee A.E. Stallings, to the first 25 UGA students to email [email protected] and reserve a copy for pickup! In her latest collection, Stallings, known for her wry and musical lyric poems, continues her archeology of the domestic, her odyssey through myth and motherhood in received and invented forms, from sonnets to syllabics. Stallings also eschews the poetry volume's conventional sections for the arbitrary order of the alphabet. Contemporary Athens itself, a place never dull during the economic and migration crises of recent years, shakes off the dust of history and emerges as a vibrant character. "Like" was a Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry.

KC Carter is a processing and metadata associate at the Brown Media Archives & Peabody Awards Collection When the pandemic happened and the UGA campus was sudde...nly closed, she worked alongside Mary Miller to train temporary workers on projects like transcribing thousands of shot logs in the WSB News Video Collection. By viewing and describing hundreds of hours of taps, their team was able to improve searchability which allowed more digital access of the collections. Thank you for all of your work to adapt Brown Media work to the digital landscape of the pandemic, KC! See more

Famed documentary filmmaker Ken Burns once said, I don’t think that there has been a film that I’ve done that hasn’t been influenced by libraries and archives.... That’s because libraries and archives, like the one in UGA’s Special Collections Building, contain artifacts and facts that help historians, researchers, and yes, filmmakers, frame and provide context for the events that shaped our world. Burns’ job, and that of others like him, would be a lot more difficult without the decisions made 25 years ago that created the Walter J. Brown Media Archives & Peabody Awards Collection to preserve and provide access to special collections of media. Today, the Brown Media Archives’ holdings range from radio broadcasts to home movies that date back over 100 years.
