It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of a brave warrior, our cousin, Mr. Joseph Pierce "Joe" Suttles Sr. (93), a long-time resident of Ben Hill and Atlanta. Joe was a son of the late Oscar and Lucille Suttles of Ben Hill, and served with honor and distinction as a Marine in the Pacific Theater in the Second World War, being wounded in action in 1945. His wartime adventures were legendary. Joe was also active in the Free and Accepted Masons, having served wit...h distinction as Georgia's top masonic officer, the Past Worshipful Grand Master. Joe also was a lifelong member of his family's ancestral church, Mt. Gilead Methodist near Camp Creek Parkway, a church which was founded by his ancestor the Rev. John M. Smith (1789-1863). Joe was the last person of whom I am aware, who still lived on and owned a portion of his ancestor John M. Smith's original land holdings in Fulton County. Joe had always joked to me that he expected to live as long as our common ancestor, William Suttles (died 1839, aged 107), and I halfway believed that Joe was going to do it, too -- until recently. Joe was a faithful friend, brother, son, husband, father, and an upright, sterling example of a Christian gentleman. Always kind, always considerate, always lending a helpful hand to anyone in need. He leaves behind his ever-faithful and loving wife Fay, and son Joseph P. Jr. Joe is in a vastly better place now. May his soul rest in well-earned peace. https://www.dignitymemorial.com//pe/joseph-suttles-8853061

This will very likely be an eventual boon for our cemetery: http://southeastmakersatl.com/2017-full-steam-ahead-atlant/

Just a few days ago, I created a new (closed, non-public) Facebook group, "Friends of Utoy." Unfortunately, I was only able to add 'X' number of people before I apparently reached the end of my allowable quota, so if you want to be included in this group, please message either Terrence White or Malcolm McDuffie, to get your name added. Thanks!

Following is a letter from our President: January 25, 2017 Dear Friends and Family of Utoy Cemetery,... We are in process of contracting with a Lawn Service Company to do leaf removal in the winter and cut the grass and spray round up once a month from March through September. Prior to this, Vice President Malcolm McDuffie did the lion’s share of this work and paid out of his pocket for others to help. As a board, we have decided that this is too much for Malcolm, but even so he is still in charge of the grounds and will oversee this. Therefore, we are really in need of donations to help with this project. The leaf removal is a colossal project and will cost us $750. After that the grass cutting and round up spray once a month needs to be done from March through September will cost at least $200 per month. Some months the grass may need to be cut more than once, depending on how much rain we have this summer. Please consider either giving a one-time donation or a smaller monthly or quarterly donation to keep up our beautiful cemetery. We have lost a huge oak tree and the amazing part is that it fell in between tomb stones and within inches of the fence. It did not damage anything. Perry Bennett has graciously volunteered to cut the tree up and have it hauled off. You can see this huge tree on our Facebook Page. Again, please help us with the on-going leaf removal and grass cutting. Checks can be sent to: Utoy Cemetery Association, Inc. C/O Charles Strickland, CPA P.O. Box 91267 East Point, GA 30364-1267 Thank you so much! Martha Peace President, Utoy Cemetery Association, Inc.
