Need another reason to Go WEST! Our alumni show how the COE can position you to follow and live your dreams. Hear from an alumna as she shares her story. -- My name is Channing Clariett and I graduated from The University of West Georgia in Spring 2019, with a Bachelor’s degree in Health and Community Wellness. After graduation, my plan was to apply to nursing school but God had other plans for me. I decided that I was going to look more into the health/wellness and public h...ealth field. I came across this program that is offered through the CDC which is called Public Health Associate Program (PHAP.) I know how stressful it is trying to find a job after graduation because many companies want you to have a ton of work experience. PHAP is a competitive two-year, paid training program for recent college graduates that are interested in a career in public health. This program gives recent graduates the opportunity to earn hands-on experience in the day-to-day operations of public health programs. Also, selected associates will have the opportunity to network with mentors and leaders across the CDC. With this program, the only requirements that are needed to apply is that you have graduated within the past two years from when you are applying and that your academic transcripts show at least a 3.0 grade point average from your most recent degree. I decided that I was going to give it a try for the 2020 cycle because applications open up early January each year. I applied this year and I have been chosen for the 2020-2022 class for PHAP. The process took about five months, which included a personal statement essay and an interview through zoom. I will be taking this new opportunity to move to Phoenix, Arizona where I will be working on Sexually Transmitted Disease Prevention. I could not have done this without the support and encouragement from Gina Maxson Brandenburg and all of my previous professors that made sure we embedded health and wellness as our daily lifestyle.
