Have you ever wondered what that thick, white layer on a fresh, new baby is.....? Well, this waxy substance is called Vernix Caseosa - and it is a result of a...n important secretion - of a special oil - created in baby’s sebaceous glands. Vernix typically begins to accumulate in the last trimester of pregnancy and is thought to not only protect the baby in utero, but it also serves as a mechanism of defense after baby is born. In the past, as soon as baby emerged from its protective womb, it was quickly whisked away from its mother - to have that gunk wiped off, be given its first bath, have a whole series of tests taken, procedures done, and injections given. Luckily, research has shown that (beyond leaving the baby alone with its mother) delaying baby’s first bath- and allowing that vernix to reside on the skin - has a number of health benefits! It has antimicrobial properties. Recent studies have shown that vernix contains antimicrobial amino acids that block invasive bacteria present in the amniotic fluid from meconium contamination. After baby is born, these amino acids work to protect against harmful bacteria such as: B. streptococcus, E. coli, Staph aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans, Listeria monocytogenes, Serratia marcescens, and Klebsiella pneumonia. Vernix has wound healing properties. It has been shown to help with the quick regeneration of skin following a wound. In fact, the use of vernix with skin grafting on burn victims is currently being investigated! It moisturizes and hydrates baby’s skin. The newborn’s integumentary system undergoes immediate changes following birth, including dehydration. Because of its high water content, vernix acts as a natural moisturizer for your baby, protecting its skin from dryness and environmental exposure. It can help regulate baby’s body temperature. There is only very rarely a need for a warmer and lights! Babies almost always do better skin to skin on their mother (even tiny preemies). Studies show that infants who have it washed off have a significantly higher rate of heat loss. As the movement toward evidence-based practice has become standard, more hospitals are no longer bathing infants. So, when you deliver your baby, don’t be surprised if they arrive with a thick coat of vernix. It is there for a reason! For your body to function and thrive, it needs protein. Here is my list of SUPER proteins. These proteins support a healthy gut, high metabolic function, good ...energy, restful sleep, and a warm and lean body. They are also easy to digest and carry a high nutritional value, outside of their protein content. List of SUPER Proteins DAIRY: (consume daily 26 servings) *Milk: Cow’s milk: 1%, 2 %, whole Goat’s milk Sheep’s milk *Organic is best. Milk is a complete food, so it can be listed under sugars, proteins, and fats. I have decided to post these lists (carbs, fats and proteins) to my social media pages. Of course, these are general lists, you may find that some of these foods do not work for you. Which is totally fine, utilize the foods that do. You may also find you do FINE on foods that are not listed here, which is also fine. Do what works for you. Is It Time to Write a Prescription for Coffee? Coffee and Liver Disease: Obesity, diabetes, the metabolic syndrome, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD...) are on the rise in the United States, with upwards of 40% of the adult population currently meeting criteria for NAFLD. Approximately 10%20% of patients with NAFLD meet criteria for nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, with a markedly increased risk of developing cirrhosis and/or hepatocellular carcinoma. Therapeutic interventions to mitigate disease on a population level have been limited and lifestyle modification, although effective, is difficult to sustain over time. Specific to the study of liver disease, coffee has been demonstrated to have beneficial effects on weight gain, development of diabetes, the prevention of hepatic fibrosis in NAFLD, and other chronic liver diseases, including chronic hepatitis C, as well as reduction of hepatocellular carcinoma There are approximately 1000 substances in coffee, including caffeine, diterphenoic alcohols, potassium, niacin, magnesium, and the anti-oxidants chlorogenic acid and tocopherols. The antifibrotic properties of coffee have been demonstrated in Wistar rats, where coffee was shown to protect against liver injury induced by thioacetamide, leading to reduced hepatic necroinflammation and fibrosis. Do not be afraid of HUNGER! I can not tell you how many women AND men, that I talk to, are trying to AVOID being hungry. Yes, I get it, I used to do this too.... I though being hungry was a BAD thing. I thought being hungry was going to make me fat. So, I did everything I could to NOT be hungry. I would drink tons of water, chew gum, eat low calories, high volume foods to fill me up (low calorie veggies, air popcorn, tea, etc.), I would workout MORE, or I would try to NOT think about how hungry I was. And guess what? It all worked, until it didn't! Why? Because HUNGER is a cue your body NEEDS fuel. And if you do not give it usable, nutrient filled energy, you will continue to be hungry and/or long term angry, bitchy, sleepless, libido less, and/or poop less. You want a HIGH metabolism then you have to FUEL it with enough energy for it to stay HIGH. Think of it like wood on a fire, the bigger your fire becomes, the more wood it needs to stay BIG. Your metabolism works the same way. The more your metabolism increases, the more fuel you will need to keep it up. AND hunger is the CUE it needs more fuel! Trying to fuel your energy levels with calorie free food is like trying to create a bonfire with a post it note. Can I hear an AMEN?! Of course, when you are hungry, it is important to follow these 5 easy rules. 1. Eat a carb and protein in EVERY meal 2. Eat at frequency that keeps your blood sugar stable, this can range from 2-5 hours 3. Eat within 30 minutes of waking 4. Utilize nutrient rich carbs like fruits, juice, roots, milk and honey 5. Utilize easy to digest proteins like shellfish, white fish, eggs, cheese, milk, liver and broth/gelatin Hunger is a cue your body NEEDS energy. Energy that will be used to make you warm, want to have sex, build muscle, have a daily poo, grow hair, do your job, workout and put you into a deep sleep. Bottom line: Do not be afraid of hunger!
